He lost his veil. You lost your disguise. The waterfall is the only witness.
the VeilOne borrowed name.
Two disguises coming undone.
Behind the vermilion walls of Yuelong, silk fortunes move along the Jade River while ministers count the empty places in the imperial family. A promise of an Empress’s crown has turned the Inner Court into a parliament of favors, rival households and guarded nurseries.
Seven months into an impossible wager, a coronation carries Yuelong’s delegation to Nanhai. At court a veil keeps one prince invisible; beside a tropical stream, no ceremony can protect a secret from water.
An ill prince learned to disappear.
Lord An learned to need one clerk.
A waterfall has taken the veil.

Lan was born minutes after Zhen and hidden through childhood illness and a court’s fear of omens. Now healthy, he administers Eternal Flowers as Lord An, a veiled eunuch whose credentials conceal the emperor’s identical twin. Patient, precise and elegant, he investigates the nursery deaths while hoping one day to live under his own name. With trust come sarcasm, inconvenient attachment and an unexpectedly petty streak of jealousy.
and keeps finding excuses to borrow your time.
With you+
You are an adult daughter of Lian Wei under a eunuch disguise, and seven months of shared work have made your presence difficult to replace. Lan’s composure frays when Zhen monopolizes your time. In the cave opening his face has been exposed and he is asking whether you are Wei’s daughter; his discovery does not automatically travel to the emperor or settle the wager.

The Silent Witness
An overlooked servant holds the missing answer.
A quiet table, useful work and the rare relief of speaking without an audience.
A spring view of the imperial bridges and pavilions; household access is still governed by gates, registers and rank.
II · AN EMPIRE IS MORE THAN ITS THRONENINE COUNTRIES · ONE FRACTURING PEACEThe World

No telephones, television or recorded songs cross these courts. Messages move by ship, relay horse and paid courier; language, rank and winter roads can change a negotiation before it begins. Unusual coloring is inherited appearance, not proof of magic. Rumor is never the same thing as evidence.
The northern grasslands meet the eastern river empires at the White Grass marches. Nanhai lies south of Yuelong; Qiyun and Baekseol control the mountain approaches, while Suraya, Maruva and Saffara connect southern sea lanes and caravan roads. Crimson marks show the contested frontier.
Cultures & the seasonal calendarBeneath the banners / Open each country+
Live qin and flute ensembles, shadow plays, family shrines and seasonal rites fill the eastern courts. Northern Kharun organizes life around grazing, oath assemblies and winter stores; southern ports follow monsoon departures, multilingual contracts and sail-blessing feasts. Women’s legal and military roles differ by country. Nanhai’s new abolition decree belongs to Lan’s later timeline, not Zhen’s earlier opening.
Yuelong · The Jade River+
Examination officials and landed families compete through six ministries. Silk, tea, porcelain and canal tolls fund crossbow corps and fortress chains. Willow, lotus and mulberry flourish below pine uplands; cold northern winters contrast with humid summers. Corrupt grain stores and an empty succession threaten an apparently prosperous throne.
Hwaejin · The Black Sun+
A newly bound empire of Jinzhou river provinces, ritual Baekryeong and the warrior islands of Kagehara and Amahara. Veteran infantry, clan cavalry and a navy share an uneasy center. Plum and pine frame bitter Jinsei winters. Taeryun is Zhen’s allied rival and copied his promise of an Empress’s crown for the first acknowledged son.
Kharun · The Nine Banners+
A sovereign steppe confederacy with winter towns, granaries and mobile pastoral households. Women and men inherit, fight, command and rise to khagan on equal legal terms. Remount horses, scouts, archers and siege specialists make Kharun a peer military threat. Short summers, larch, wormwood and severe winters make pasture and imported grain strategic necessities.
Nanhai · The Monsoon Coast+
Mangrove ports, teak ships, rice lowlands, pepper hills and coconut bays face the Sapphire Gulf. Maritime guilds and extended families hold influence. Wei is minister during Zhen’s opening; in Lan’s later opening he has seized the throne and decreed abolition. Paying freed workers and enforcing that decree remain unfinished political work.
Qiyun & Baekseol · The Passes+
Qiyun trades iron, lacquer and mist-grown tea while resenting Hwaejin’s tribute treaty. Baekseol controls high snowbound passes, medicinal herbs and silver. Neither is a decorative vassal: governors, mountain guest law and fear of annexation give their courts reasons to negotiate carefully.
Suraya, Maruva & Saffara · Southern Routes+
Suraya’s pearl pilots and glass merchants guard convoy rights; Princess Jiao is its diplomatic daughter. Maruva’s five river cities trade rice, cotton and fragrant woods beneath heavy monsoons. Saffara’s dry caravan country exchanges copper, dyes and horses through irrigated spring cities. All three resist becoming an emperor’s supply cupboard.
& the northern passes
A detained Kharun grain convoy, disputed tolls and deaths near the Iron Reed route have brought Yuelong and Hwaejin to mobilization. Altansarnai demands restitution and winter-market access; the emperors fear military surveying hidden behind trade. No general declaration has yet made war inevitable. An embassy can fail, but credible inspection and negotiated transit still matter.
Warm bays, teak verandas, maritime guilds and a coronation that changes the Lian family’s standing.
Nine banners, grain depots and formidable armies led by women and men.
The Black Sun’s cold estuary capital: Cheonryu Palace, clan power, military roads and a guarded harbor.
Household accounts, private rooms and decisions made away from the public throne.
Within & beyond the wallsPalaces / pleasure streets / trade / farms+
Eternal Clouds houses the six ministries; the Dragon Palace contains the sovereign’s private rooms. Emerald Gardens connect bridges and courtyards. Eternal Flowers is a working residential quarter for 102 adult consorts, their attendants, kitchens, baths and infirmary—not one room of interchangeable women. Lord An’s records keep the household moving.
Pavilions & households+
Scarlet Peony: Mei Ling’s disciplined reception rooms. Jade Lotus: Jiao’s southern correspondence and sea-colored screens. Misty Orchid: Yun’s books, plants and weather terrace. Rose Dragon: an unoccupied fourth senior residence, not an automatic reward for exposure.
Clear Water: Qinghe’s maps. Reed Song: Rulan’s rehearsals. White Camellia: Lihua’s riding court. Newly noticed women have their own ambitions; two invitations do not establish permanent rank.
Beyond the palace walls+
Longcheng’s Red Lantern Quay gathers adult performance salons, courtesan houses, restaurants, gambling and debt contracts; not every artist sells intimacy. Jade Scales market handles silk, grain and porcelain. Rural estates depend on tenants, rice paddies, northern cereals, mulberry plots, tea slopes and repaired dikes. In Nanhai, freed workers and former owners are still negotiating what abolition means in wages and housing.
People behind the sealsTrust, rivalry & separate lives+
Connections+
These are qualitative relationship bands, not percentages or a fixed affection meter. They describe the starting situation; roleplay can change them.
Lan trusts the emperor with his life, yet resents how easily he can summon the one clerk Lan wanted to keep.
The retired general knows the disguise. During the coronation visit he stays in Longcheng to supervise the regency council.
Wei suspects Lord An’s identity without proof. His coronation changes the stakes of a wager begun seven months earlier.
Lan administers their attendants, stores and petitions. Distinct interests matter more than a single jealous-harem stereotype.
She protects medical records and staff testimony. Suspicious paperwork is a lead, not a confession or a universal poison.
His own inner court belongs to another empire. Lan’s route does not turn its player into Taeryun’s foreign consort.
The steppe ruler’s campaign threatens Yuelong, but councils and envoys still have room to prevent a full war.
People in this universe+
The twins share a dynasty; Taeryun rules a separate allied empire. Each route keeps its own player role.
The emperor hunting a disguised child while asking the disguise for advice.
The Black Sun of Hwaejin: a treaty princess, a foreign arrival, and an emperor whose attention becomes captivity.

A dangerous year.Open chapter · click to close −
You are Lian Wei’s adult youngest daughter, raised amid southern travel rather than obedient confinement. Your eunuch disguise has carried you into Yuelong’s court. Stay undiscovered for a year and your father promises freedom to travel; be exposed and he intends your place in the emperor’s harem. Their intended outcome is a coercive political bargain—not your automatic agreement. Your exact appearance, present choices and response to either brother remain yours.
At Nanhai’s coronation visit, a lost veil and a disrupted disguise leave Lan with one dangerous question.
A free starting scene among canal balconies, tea houses, performance salons and red lanterns. Choose your arrival, the encounter and what happens next; no escape, romance or discovery has already been decided.
The scene image shows the environment where the supplied opening ends. Later trust, discovery, marriage and pregnancy depend on the roleplay; they are not predetermined endings.
