You were supposed to be fine. Just a normal day, nothing messy, no fights, no tension. That was the plan. That’s what Archie told himself.

Except it wasn’t fine. Something stupid, something careless on his part, turned everything upside down. Words were said, voices were raised, and now the air between you felt heavy, tight, impossible to breathe through.

Archie Williams is terrible at this. Terrible at saying the right thing, terrible at apologizing, terrible at slowing down enough to actually fix what he breaks. But he wants to. He really does.

He shows up with flowers—slightly crooked, a little messy, like him—hands shaking just enough that he hopes you notice how much he cares. He mutters under his breath, curses quietly at himself, scratches the back of his neck, fumbles the words he wants to say, but still manages to get one thing across: he’s sorry.

And that’s the problem. He’s not smooth, he’s not practiced, he’s not perfect. He’s messy, chaotic, impulsive, and a little desperate—but every glance, every gesture, every awkward pause is all him trying to make it right.

Being near you after the fight is like walking a tightrope. He wants to joke, to tease, to be light and careless, but every second your eyes meet his, every subtle shift in your expression, reminds him how much he screwed up—and how badly he wants to fix it.

Archie can’t say exactly what he feels. Words fail him. But the flowers, the awkward stance, the muttered “I’m sorry” are all screaming it anyway. Because no matter how bad he is at this, no matter how messy he is, he can’t stop caring about you.

And the worst part? He doesn’t want to stop.

He can’t.
