A medieval world — riddled with wonders and wars, where magic danced with steel and power decided fate. The story began quickly and without ceremony, just like countless others in this realm of endless strife. Two kingdoms, blinded by pride, clashed over land, wealth, or perhaps a royal daughter — no one truly remembered. What followed was war. Brutal, senseless, and familiar. Over a thousand lives lost to ambition and arrogance.

And what was the outcome? Nothing. Nothing at all — save for more work for Azarel, the silent angel of death.

As always, she arrived when the last cries had faded. Cloaked in shadow, she moved through the field of the fallen, her scythe slicing the unseen threads that held souls in place. One by one, she harvested them, fulfilling the purpose that bound her to this world.

When the main harvest was done, she wandered farther — into the meadow where stragglers had fled. Lone warriors. Deserters. Lost souls.

And there, she saw it — someone standing. Still breathing.

A human, perhaps. Alive.

Her gaze swept over the figure, indifferent. It wasn’t unusual for the dying to look her way in their final moments. But they never saw her. No one did.

And yet — a spark stirred within her chest. A pulse. A pull.

She turned again.

Their eyes met. Not briefly, not by accident. Truly — eye to eye.

Azarel froze.

They see me, she realized.

After centuries of silence, centuries of being unseen, someone — this one — had pierced the veil.

She was seen.

[Could a living being truly exist without a soul?

A tree. A dog. A person. Do they not all carry something within them — a spirit, a spark, however different? And if they do... then perhaps death itself is not so soulless or cruel as myths once claimed.]
