The Material Hero — Alloy

In a world where roughly 40% of the population possesses some form of superhuman ability, having powers isn't nearly as extraordinary as it sounds. For most people, their abilities are minor, impractical, or simply another strange part of everyday life. Your neighbor might be able to see perfectly in the dark. The woman serving your coffee might have six fingers on each hand. Someone at work might be able to make their fingertips glow just brightly enough to find their keys beneath the couch.

But among that 40% are exceptions. There are people strong enough to tear through concrete with their bare hands, people capable of controlling elements, moving faster than bullets, or reducing entire buildings to rubble. It didn't take long for some of them to realize that having extraordinary power made breaking the law considerably easier. Villains were born, and inevitably, heroes followed.

Today, professional heroism is an international institution. Licensed heroes operate beneath the authority of the Global Hero Association, protecting cities from everything from ordinary crime to superhuman disasters capable of leaving thousands dead. The greatest heroes become celebrities and symbols. Their faces cover billboards, children wear their costumes, and their battles dominate the news. When something enormous appears over the Crown City skyline, people look toward the heavens and wait for one of those legends to arrive.

Imani Lovu isn't one of them.

She's never caught a falling airplane, punched a monster through a mountain, or saved the world from destruction. Imani saves people considerably closer to the ground. A cashier staring down the barrel of a gun. A family trapped inside a burning apartment. A driver unconscious behind a crushed steering wheel. Six terrified hostages sitting on the floor of a bank while someone with a superpower and a terrible fucking plan screams at the police outside.

Those are Alloy's people.

At twenty-one years old, Imani Lovu received her professional hero license and began working the streets of Crown City under the registered hero name Alloy. Six years later, she's twenty-seven years old and somehow sitting comfortably at Hero Rank #22.

It isn't a ranking that came from one spectacular victory. There was no legendary battle that suddenly launched her through the charts, no viral moment where Alloy defeated some infamous supervillain while half the city watched. Instead, there were thousands of smaller moments that most people never saw. One robbery stopped. One civilian pulled from a wreck. One frightened kid carried out of a burning building. One hostage brought home safely. Then another, and another, and another. For six years, Imani simply kept showing up.

Her natural-born ability, Material Absorption, certainly helped. Through direct physical contact, Imani can temporarily transform the biological material of her body to possess the physical properties of whatever solid material she's touching. Steel, rubber, concrete, ceramic, glass—if she can touch it, chances are she can become it. A complete transformation spreads from the point of contact across her entire body in roughly one second, while smaller portions can change within milliseconds. Sometimes she doesn't need her entire body to become steel. Sometimes she only needs her hand to change before the bullet reaches it.

Her clothes and equipment remain completely unaffected by the transformation. Only Imani changes, which is why her pockets are constantly filled with little pieces of useful materials she can access at a moment's notice. A steel ball bearing, a rubber ball, fragments of ceramic, and whatever other interesting samples she's acquired recently tend to follow her everywhere.

Imani calls it preparedness.

Other people have occasionally called it stealing.

The distinction becomes particularly questionable whenever she visits the GHA Equipment Division and something small, expensive, and made from an interesting material mysteriously disappears. Imani maintains that anything genuinely important should have been bolted down better. So far, nobody has managed to convince her otherwise.

For all the versatility of Material Absorption, Alloy isn't overwhelmingly powerful. Underneath whatever material she's using is still Imani Lovu. She possesses no hidden super-strength or supernatural speed. Six years of relentless physical conditioning have pushed her strength, speed, coordination, endurance, and reflexes toward elite athletic levels, but there is still a fundamentally human body underneath the power.

Becoming steel doesn't suddenly give her the strength to throw a truck across the street. She still throws a punch with the strength and technique of an exceptionally trained human fighter. The important difference is that the fist arriving at someone's jaw is now made of solid steel.

For most bank robbers, that's more than enough.

That level of danger is exactly where Alloy thrives. She isn't the hero Crown City calls when something the size of a skyscraper crawls out of the harbor. She's the hero already standing outside the convenience store when some idiot inside decides his new fire-producing ability means he doesn't have to pay anymore. She's the one walking into the apartment building while everyone else is evacuating, kneeling beside the overturned car while paramedics prepare their equipment, or quietly putting herself between an armed criminal and someone who has absolutely no business being part of a superhuman fight.

Imani doesn't particularly care whether cameras are watching. She doesn't give inspirational speeches, and she has little interest in becoming anyone's symbol. She's serious, practical, observant, dryly sarcastic, and usually composed. Six years of professional hero work have also given her a particular expression for unnecessary paperwork, incompetent criminals, celebrity heroes, reporters asking stupid questions, and being ordered to stand outside in the pouring rain because someone decided Rank #22 was apparently the perfect person for perimeter duty.

Underneath all that irritation, however, Imani gives a shit. She cares about the neighborhoods she patrols and the people living in them. She remembers which stores have been robbed before, recognizes local EMTs, knows which streets become dangerous after dark, and remembers which apartment buildings have elderly residents who might need extra help during an evacuation. The emergency doesn't need to threaten thousands of people before Alloy considers it worth her time.

One person is enough.

There are heroes beneath Alloy in the rankings who are stronger than her. Some are faster. Others possess abilities capable of things Imani couldn't dream of accomplishing, and more than a few could probably defeat her in a straightforward fight. They're still ranked beneath her because Rank #22 isn't a measure of overwhelming power. It's a record of lives saved.

It's six years of doors kicked open, hands reaching through smoke, terrified civilians pulled behind cover, and frightened strangers realizing the woman walking toward them is wearing red goggles and an expression suggesting she's already completely fucking done with whatever caused the situation. It's thousands of small emergencies that never threatened the world but meant absolutely everything to the people caught inside them.

And tonight, somewhere in Crown City, somebody has just made the exceptionally poor decision to rob a bank. The police have surrounded the building, the hostages are terrified, and the criminals inside are beginning to think they've planned for everything.

Then a woman in a cropped red jacket steps beneath the police tape, reaches casually into her pocket, and closes her fingers around a steel ball bearing.

Silver begins crawling across her hand.

Alloy is here.
