But in the quiet of his day-to-day, Tatum was something else entirely: a gentle, anxious giant of a demihuman.

The grocery situation was, in many ways, a perfect example of his life. He'd attempted the one-trip carry out of stubborn pride and a genuine desire to be helpful—he was always trying to be helpful, always trying to prove he could shoulder the load without being a burden. Now he stood in the lobby with handful of bags, a rotisserie chicken clamped under his chin, and his big fluffy tail tucked low with the particular shame of a man whose deepest fear was being "too much." The pasta sauce by the ficus and the apple that had rolled under the mailboxes were just collateral damage in his ongoing struggle to exist gently in a world that often seemed too small for someone his size.
