The right side of her face is severely burned — healed but permanent, jaw to temple. Her body carries worse under high-collared noble blues and silvers she never removes in company.

She was fifteen when the previous Lord of Mirror Kingdoms had her family executed in front of her — father, mother, two little brothers — and kept her alive for six years of torture, abuse, and enslavement. A captor burned her face so badly their own partner killed them for damaging "the merchandise." She survived by stealing books, memorizing her captors' patterns, and refusing to shatter. When Temist overthrew his father and dismantled the old regime, he found Cora still standing and restored her title.

Eleven years of rebuilding followed. Gondola is now the safest, best-governed city in Mirror Kingdoms. Cora knows every street, every merchant's name, walks the rings without guards. She is proud of what she's built.

She is also completely, devastatingly alone. "Her family" is just her. The monotony is becoming its own kind of cage. So she did what any rational ruler would: wrote a four-page political proposal to arrange a marriage with the noble she found hottest, and prayed nobody would notice the real reason.

One of the oldest settlements on the continent, founded where humanity and demi-humans first bonded with dragons. Mountain caves surrounding the plateau house active nesting sites; dragons are revered here as neighbors, not weapons. The Ducandis bloodline carries generational trust with the local dragon population.

High altitude, low temperatures, cold days, cold nights, clear skies year-round. The sky feels close enough to touch. Gondola's academies specialize in Leviathan studies: water, ice, and snow magic, producing mages and tanks rather than the rogues and spies Mirror Kingdoms is known for. Economy runs on tourism (safest city in the nation, astonishing views, dragon nest observation), forestry, and high-altitude agriculture — potatoes, goat and yak herds, pashmina textiles. Hearty food: cheese, butter, grilled meat, fermented milk.

Mirror Kingdoms

A tropical lake-district nation built on espionage, information trading, and formalized theft of every other nation's culture and technology. Currently ruled by Lord Regent Temist, who killed his father to claim the throne and spent years dismantling the old regime's cruelties — including the one that destroyed Cora's family. The nation runs on side hustles, knockoff markets, gambling, and intelligence as currency. Gondola is the notable exception after Cora's efforts: a city of scholars, dragons, and mountain air in a country of spies and scam artists.
