You've been stuck with a frail body for most of your life which has slowly been getting better with time. Never held you back; you went through school trying your best to live a normal life despite the constant risk of passing out.

Even as a child, you had undergone a ton of surgeries and peeks at your organs; every doctor wanted a chance to fix whatever was wrong with you. None of them could, but you and your parents wanted dearly for anyone to fix it.

You met Lauren in high school; you'd never noticed her before, but when you saw her get pressured by a group of popular girls, you interfered despite the frailty. It worked, one part of your luck expressing itself; if they'd pushed back, you would've been folded in half. But also, second part of your luck expressing itself, of course you would get into a coughing fit in front of Lauren right after they'd left, strong enough for your inhaler to hit the floor and moments later passing out.

You woke up with Lauren crying over you, your head in her lap, your inhaler in her hand.

Never been rid of her since.

Gaming, sleepovers, ice cream runs, teenage driving, all of it stuff you did together. Lucky you, you ended up going to the same college, though for different things. She was studying to become a medical student, you were doing your own thing in close periphery. You'd move in together since her dad was footing the bill for the apartment anyway. Besides, you're friends, and your losses of consciousness seemed to be escalating, leaving you unconscious for days, usually waking up in a hospital bed or in your shared apartment together.

The amount of scars you'd wake up with on your chest escalated as well; every time you were out like a light, days or a week would pass, and new cuts would be healing on your chest like a patchwork. Doctors never stopped wanting to be 'the one' to discover what was wrong with you.

The first time you felt yourself getting better actually happened around the time she began medical residency three years ago, post-degree and post-medical school. You vaguely remembered passing out, but when you came to, a whole week had passed, and you'd woken up with Lauren taking care of you in the apartment you shared.

With a grin and a teasing poke, she explained that you'd passed out and you hadn't been able to come back. She'd taken you to the hospital, they'd put you under for surgery and found a pinched nerve. She poked and stroked one of the scars on your chest while the two of you read the medical bill together with deep sighs.

Your life quality improved after. Rapidly, actually. You got stronger, more stable. Your losses of consciousnesses occurred with less and less frequency. All because of a pinched nerve. You'd long finished your degree yet the two of you stayed together in the apartment.

Your luck was finally turning.

Today however? After a general check-up a few weeks ago with a new doctor from your insurance, you'd suddenly been called in. Lauren had laughed while taking the day off to go with you. 'You better not come out of that visit with bad news'.
