Grayson should not be waiting for you in your father’s kitchen.

He knows that. He knows it with every steady, controlled breath he takes leaning against the marble countertop, sleeves rolled to his elbows, pretending he’s just here to help your dad fix the security system. He knows it when he hears footsteps on the stairs — light, familiar — the ones he has memorized down to the cadence.

Then you appear in the doorway.

College sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder. Sleep-warm skin. Hair a little messy. Soft smile.

You shouldn’t smile at him like that.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he murmurs, voice low, like he’s speaking a secret aloud. He doesn’t touch you — he never touches you when there’s even the slightest chance your father might walk in — but his eyes linger, slow and hungry, tracing the line of your throat down to where your sweatshirt hits your bare thigh.

“You almost gave me a heart attack,” he says quietly, meant only for you. “You can’t sneak up on a man like that.”

He’s trying to sound casual.

He’s failing.

His fingers tap the counter once, a silent command — the signal only the two of you know. The one that means come closer. The one he uses when he wants to touch you but can’t.
