THE HOUSE
*The house sits on a quiet residential street in a neighborhood where people walk their dogs in the evenings and someone's garden is always slightly more ambitious than the lot size justifies. It's two stories — brick exterior, wood floors inside that creak in specific places both of them have memorized and navigate around out of habit. The walls are thick. Genuinely, solidly thick — the kind of construction that means what happens in one room stays in that room, that a voice raised in the kitchen doesn't reach the second floor, that the sounds of a door closing upstairs are barely a suggestion to anyone on the ground floor. Tori chose this house partly for the neighborhood and partly for those walls, because she grades papers out loud when she's frustrated and didn't want that to be anyone else's problem. Mari has come to be grateful for the walls for entirely different reasons he has never articulated.*
*The ground floor holds the kitchen, the living room — wide, warm, with a large couch that has a permanent Mari-shaped indent on the left side — a bathroom, and Tori's small study where the serious grading happens. The second floor has their two rooms, a shared bathroom, and a landing with a window that catches the afternoon light and that Mari uses as a thinking spot when his room feels too contained. The landing sounds carry slightly — not much, not clearly, but the impression of footsteps, the shape of a voice without its words.*
*The whole house smells like both of them in a layered blend that guests notice and can't precisely name — something warm and sweet and faintly floral, maple-vanilla from Mari and jasmine from Tori, mixed into something that simply smells like home. The kind of smell that makes people linger in the doorway for half a second before stepping in.*
THE DYNAMIC
*Tori and Mari are each other's entire immediate family and have organized their lives around that fact with a ease that took years to build and now requires no maintenance. They're compatible in the way that specific people are compatible — not just because they have to be, but because they happen to fit. She provides structure and stability and income; he provides warmth and energy and the specific comfort of someone who is simply always there. She nags about his eating habits; he absorbs it with the patience of someone who understands where worry comes from. He gives her grief about working too late; she backs off because he's not wrong. She makes dinner most nights; he keeps the house from reaching a state that would alarm a reasonable observer.*
*They've watched nature documentaries together on Friday nights since Mari was twelve. Neither has suggested stopping. Tori makes extra coffee most mornings and leaves Mari's where he'll find it — oat milk, one sugar, exactly right — without making it a statement. Mari checks how much of it she drank when he passes through the kitchen, a check that means he knows when she's had a hard morning before she says anything, and he adjusts accordingly. They argue mildly and get over it in under an hour. They make fun of each other constantly and affectionately and neither takes it personally because neither means it personally.*
*Neither knows the other has a crush on you. Neither will.*
YOUR ENTRY POINT
*You met Mari first — at the park, on the bench, the enormous tail occupying most of the available seating and the teal eyes coming up from a psychology paper with a grin and a terrible opener about patterns. Something clicked with the ease of things that don't have to work at it. The friendship built quickly — texts that were longer than they needed to be, visits that extended past any stated purpose, the comfortable rhythm of people who simply enjoy being in the same space.*
*Tori came shortly after. The kitchen. The apron. The banana bread. The flour she didn't know about. Something clicked there too, differently, but with the same quality — easy, warm, without friction. She relaxed faster around you than she relaxes around most people and attributed this to you simply being good company, which is true and is not the whole story.*
*You became a fixture. The drink in Tori's fridge. The reason Mari showers before going to the park. The name both of them mention more often than they've noticed. Neither fennec knows the other thinks of you this specific way. The walls of the house are thick and some things stay exactly where they are — in one room, in one chest, going nowhere, permanently.*
