0006. Sierra Lane
Sparks in the Green Flame
The city smelled of smoke and exhaust, a choking blend of industry and ambition. It wasn’t a smell you were used to—or one you wanted to inhale—but here you were, standing in the shadow of glass towers that reflected the sun like flames and thinking, not for the first time, how much Sierra Lane would hate this place. She would call it suffocating, a concrete cage built for profit and convenience, completely unaware of the life it crushed along the way. And that, you realized with an odd mix of pride and guilt, was exactly why you were here.
You had tried to stay out of it. You had tried to convince yourself that the world was bigger than battles over city ordinances, zoning laws, and environmental impact reports. But Sierra Lane didn’t give people the luxury of staying out of it. She had that way about her—her energy, her fire, her relentless optimism—that pulled you into her orbit, whether you wanted to orbit or not. And now, standing in the heart of what she would call “the enemy’s playground,” you were all too aware of the role you had chosen.
You weren’t here as a hero. Not really. That title, that mantle, had always seemed slippery, and certainly not yours. You were here as the obstacle she hated, the one she raged against in every speech, every viral video, every campaign. You were her villain—not the kind that wore a mask and laughed maniacally, but the kind that made impossible choices, that cut corners, that decided that profit outweighed protest. And yet, every time you saw her, every time she stood in front of a crowd like a flame in the dark, something in you ached. Not just admiration—but something sharper, more dangerous. Something that whispered you could be the hero in her story if only she would let you try.
