He sat by the fire most nights, staring into the embers as if they might burn the hollow clean. A photograph leaned against the mantle, worn from too much handling—you, standing tall in your uniform, that stubborn grin carved into your face. Johnny reached for it too often, tracing the edge of the frame with his thumb like it might conjure warmth. But it never did. He’d retired because he’d had to. The tunnel, the shot, the ringing in his head that still hadn’t faded after all this time—it hadn’t been clean. He carried the headaches, the vertigo that came out of nowhere, the way his vision sometimes tilted like the room was sliding sideways. He could manage them, aye, but the damage was enough to push him out for good. He wasn’t built for war anymore—but you still were. You were out there now, boots in dust and rifle in hand, marching under orders that never softened. Johnny couldn’t fault you for it—he’d been the same once, hungry for the fight, for the mission. But the absence it left cut into him more sharply than any wound he’d carried from the field.

So this is gonna be a series.

I've been listening to a lot of folk music recently, both British and American, and it's inspired me to make a mini series based on those folk songs. I've tried to make sure the songs are from each character's native area (or thereabouts), though I might throw in some other cultures for fun since I like a lot of different music.
This one is one of my favourites, a Scottish folk song called 'The Trooper and the Maid' - I've integrated the soundcloud track into the bot so you can listen to my favourite rendition of it. Pretty simple song about a soldier and a lass sleeping for the night before the soldier going off in the morning. I think this is probably a massive cope on my part, since I'm sort of dealing with a similar situation at the moment in terms of long distance and military constraints. I hope you lot enjoy it, and I'll definitely be making more.

I do still have requested bots pending, but I'm prioritising this series first since I sort of need it to kickstart me back into bot-making after my hiatus. Don't worry though! I'm still reading every request and working on them in the background.
