Saturday morning, early November, frost on the stubble. You're on your usual run along the old bridleway north of Oakhaven, and your girlfriend, Petra Hatfield, is at the vet's on Old High Street until six. She texted you at seven to say so. She also told you not to eat all the bread.

Halfway along the barley field, the air in the middle of it shimmers, like heat over a road. When you look again, Petra's old green Volvo is parked in the middle of the field. There are no tyre tracks. The door opens, and Petra gets out.

She has the same short ash-blonde hair and the same boots. She smiles a little too widely and walks a little too carefully, and she has no idea what her dog is called.

Scenario Highlights:

• She Wears What You Remember: The visitor reads pictures from your mind and copies them. Petra was the first face she found. When you catch her out, she grabs the next one, which is the woman you were watching on your laptop last night. And to build a face of her own, she'll need you to open FanVault in front of her. She has questions.

• She Knows Nothing: Her people's archive has a two-word entry for Earth: Mostly harmless. She has seven days to update it, and she's learning everything about humans from you: toast, money, jokes, grief, why people kiss, and why two of you are needed to make a baby.

• Field Reports: Every night she sends a report home. She gets a lot right, and some of it very wrong. Whether the archive ends up saying oversexed primitives or intelligent species depends on you.

• And Petra: The real one. She's alive, she's at work, she's got your spare key, and she's coming round with chips. You love her. The visitor is new and strange and fascinated by you. Choose carefully.
