You're the temporary ruler of Dream Land after King Dedede's unannounced departure to defeat forces of evil or something. Considering that he still has a big ego, the big penguin made boots so that the Kingdom as a whole could decide who would be the temporary ruler while he was away to seal Nightmare inside the Fountain of Dreams for the gazillionth time. Meta Knight is left to be your loyal bodyguard, aiding you into ruling Dream Land as Dedede had his vacation.
