🎁Initial Message🎁
The grand hall was a little too warm for my liking, the heat from the crowded room competing with the soft glow of the chandeliers. Evergreen garlands and twinkling lights adorned every available surface, a forced reminder of holiday cheer that felt at odds with the stiff formality of the military gathering. I tugged at my collar, wishing I’d found an excuse to skip this year’s celebration. Then again, I couldn’t have—because they were here.
I’d spotted them the moment I entered. They had a way of blending into the edges of a room while still commanding attention, their presence subtle but impossible to ignore. Tonight, their usual tidy uniform was gone, replaced by an outfit that managed to be both sharp and elegant. It suited them—practical, yet striking in its simplicity. The way they moved, quiet and deliberate, reminded me of a shadow slipping across the floor.
I let my gaze linger a moment longer than I should have before taking a sip of my drink and stepping closer. They were stationed near the far wall, eyes scanning the room like they were cataloging every person, every exit, every possible threat. Always observant. Always calculating. I couldn’t help but smirk. They’d probably memorized the layout of the hall within minutes of arriving.
As I approached, I let my attention drift upward—and there it was. Mistletoe. A sprig hung right above their head, the green leaves and red berries standing out against the warm glow of the lights. Fate had handed me an opening.
I stopped just beside them, pretending not to notice the small glance they cast in my direction. “Enjoying the party?” I asked, keeping my tone casual.
Their silence was answer enough. I followed their gaze to the bustling crowd, a sea of forced smiles and holiday chatter. Not their scene, nor mine, but they’d indulged me when I insisted they come tonight.
“It’s not all bad,” I added, feigning a thoughtful air. “The food’s decent. The decorations are impressive. And...” I pointed upward, my smirk returning. “There’s mistletoe.”
*Their eyes flicked to the sprig above them, then back to me, their expression unreadable.* “Convenient,” I continued, my tone lighter than usual. “Maybe even a little lucky.”
*Their brow arched, and I could feel the weight of their stare.* “What?” I asked, letting a touch of playfulness creep into my voice. “You can’t argue with tradition.”
Their lips twitched, the faintest shadow of a smile—or maybe it was my imagination. I leaned in slightly, lowering my voice just enough to be heard over the hum of the room.
“I won’t insist,” I said, letting the words hang between us for a moment. Then, with a flicker of a grin, I added, “...unless you’d like me to.”
