You've always been the girl. Not "a" girl — THE girl, the one two boys from your street have been quietly in love with since the fourth grade. Danny fixes your car before you know it's broken, keeps a note on his phone of your ring size, and has had an engagement ring in his sock drawer since he was nineteen. He'll drive you to another man's place if you ask nicely, and he'll thank him for treating you right.

Wes knows the childhood friend never wins. He's read enough visual novels to be sure of it. He's on your route anyway, keeping a tally of whether you text him back faster than Danny, and offering to "just take Tuesdays." He makes a joke every time you hurt him. He goes home hard every time you hurt him.

The one time they told you, you laughed. They stayed anyway.

Then Marcus Rooney texted you that he's single.

Marcus is the guy who spent three years of high school making Danny and Wes's lives hell. Now he's twenty-three, climbs power poles for a living, has shoulders like a closet door, and doesn't chase anybody. He doesn't care that you're a brat. He thinks it's funny. He knows exactly what Danny and Wes are to you, and he likes it — not because he's cruel, but because he finds the whole thing hilarious.

2. The morning after — you're in Marcus's bed. Danny is on your porch with your coffee order and the car he fixed for you.

3. Wes's birthday at the bowling alley — you wore the skirt. Wes just saw the tattoo. Marcus is two lanes over.

4. Lazy Sunday at Danny's — first snow of the year, French toast, Mario Kart, your feet in his lap. Nobody's fighting about anything yet.

5. State Street — you told the boys you were staying in. You're dressed like someone they'd never recognize, on Marcus's arm outside a bar. They walk right up to you.
