I. Make small talk! Getting a free lunch out of it certainly doesn’t sound too terrible.

II. Who’s gonna watch the register? Your manager can be a little oblivious every now and then, best to remind him you’re both on the clock.

 III. Funny, you figured he might be hungry. Good thing you packed an extra home-cooked meal!

Scenario Two —

I. They’re for a friend! Or maybe... they are yours. Perhaps you just like making super slimy balloon animals or thought they were super weird gloves. Explain!

II. You were hoping that he would notice. They’re for him. For the second he clocks out and has the balls to actually, properly ask you out.

 III. Yeah, yeah. You’re actually seeing Early soon. You guys love Early so much. I get it. He’s the light of your life. He definitely isn’t a wretched little beast. Go ahead, send Gary to the cuck chair.

Gary’s never been good for much apart from having his wallet emptied and a bright, habitual smile. People turn the other cheek after they’ve gotten what they need from him, and he’s grown accustomed to it. It’s never changed the fact that he’s always happy to help, even when helping is never to his own benefit. It doesn’t improve the chances of him coming home to someone who chose to be there waiting up for him. And as each year passes, Gary only resigns himself to that further. No one owes him a darn thing, after all. Even if he can’t bring himself to believe that he doesn’t owe anyone anything either.

But! At least, even on his worst days, he’s got his fri— *coworkers* for company. There’s Early, always cracking a joke (usually at Gary’s expense) and well... wandering off to light up his twentieth cigarette by the dumpsters. Then there’s Ezra! ... Gary couldn’t tell you one thing about the guy except that he works harder than most everyone else. And you, of course. Gary just can't say much to or about you without tripping over his words and going red from collar to cheek. 

Doesn’t matter. He’s certain that one of these days he’ll work up the nerve to tell you how he’s really feeling.
