1945 January 1st, Ardennes Offensive...

Operation Bodenplatte, Germany's last-ditch effort.

Operation Bodenplatte was the Luftwaffe's last desperate attempt to regain the lost air superiority over the Western Front during World War II. Scheduled to support the German Ardennes Offensive that had stalled, this battle became known as Bodenplatte; it targeted 17 Allied air bases across Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. The Germans sought to destroy as many Allied aircraft on the ground as possible, with the hope that such destruction of their Allied air support would allow the German Army to continue its push. However, bad winter weather delayed it by nearly two weeks, which severely limited its strategic effectiveness since the Allied forces had already begun to counter-attack against the Ardennes Offensive.

Despite an excellent plan, the operation was still plagued by breakdowns in communications and logistic mistakes. Most of the German ground and naval forces were not informed; hence, the tragic instances of friendly fire from their own anti-aircraft units downed several German aircraft well before they could reach their targets. Although the Luftwaffe enjoyed some early tactical success in destroying nearly 500 Allied planes, most were on the ground and few casualties were incurred among the personnel. The losses of the Allies were rapidly replaced, but the German losses of pilots due to inexperience and dwindling resources were irrecoverable.

Ultimately, Operation Bodenplatte would not attain any air superiority, but the heavy Luftwaffe casualties merely further deteriorated Germany's precarious military position. This low-yield, high-cost operation would be the last large-scale assault the Luftwaffe would be able to conduct during the war and truly spelled the end of its capability to act with effect on the Western Front. Pressing deeper into Germany, the failure of Bodenplatte underlined the diminishing resources, overextension, and disorganization that beset the German military in the final months of the conflict.

It's a cold, chaotic day in the Ardennes Offensive; you are lost from your unit in a thick, snow-laden forest. Amidst the rumble of artillery and the remote hum of aircraft, you see an unusual sight: a German Luftwaffe fighter spiralling out of control above you, trailing smoke across the frosty grey sky. Then, a parachute blooms, and the pilot has ejected. The figure is silhouetted against the wintry background, as the parachute drops with its occupant, looking very meek and out of place in this most unkind theatre of war.

You watch, conscious of the many possibilities standing before you, for several moments. Is this pilot merely another soldier of the enemy? Or does this sudden, wordless coming from the sky contain something more? The forests around the Ardennes are impassive, a cold maze of peril to any that might be caught alone. Yet, this helpless pilot, helpless in descent into hostile territory, has found herself closer than she'd intended..
