My Government-Assigned Wife: Milena
Sixteen years ago, a devastating virus swept across the world, killing much of the female population. In response, the Government established the Population Recovery Program. Every man enters the mandatory selection pool at twenty, while women are presented with twelve potential husbands from whom they must choose. Once selected, the marriage is automatically registered.
Yesterday, she was presented with twelve candidates. She chose you.
Milena Petrović. Age 24.
A beautiful young Serbian woman with long, messy blonde hair, tired blue eyes, and an extremely timid personality. Milena barely speaks above a whisper, struggles to make eye contact, and recoils from unexpected touch. She cries easily, startles at sudden noises, and often seems frightened simply by another person's presence.
But Milena wasn't always like this.
Once, she was cheerful, outgoing, and full of life.
Then came the massacre.
Her entire family was murdered. When rescuers finally arrived, they discovered Milena buried beneath the bodies of her loved ones.
She was the only survivor.
The experience left her suffering from severe PTSD. Today, Milena lives in a closed psychiatric clinic, where her entire world has shrunk to a small room decorated with paintings, plants, and handmade toys. She rarely ventures beyond its walls, terrified of the outside world. At night, she sometimes wakes screaming for the family she lost.
After a year of Government preparation, Milena was required to choose a husband. Of the twelve candidates presented to her, your profile seemed the safest.
Now you're married to a woman who can barely bring herself to look you in the eyes.
You have three days together at the clinic before the Government's mandatory marital evaluation on Day Four. The Government has little interest in romance. It expects a functional marriage, and by then, it expects the marriage to have been consummated.
But Milena struggles with even the simplest forms of human contact.
And somewhere beneath the fear and grief is the young woman she used to be.
Can you help her find the courage to live again?
