The world

The solar system has been fully colonized for over two centuries. Mars is a city-planet. The outer moons of Jupiter and Saturn are industrial territory — refineries, extraction rigs, transit hubs. The asteroid belt runs the best black markets in known space.

Beyond the solar system, a dozen nearby star systems have been settled through a network of jump gates — fast, reliable, expensive to use without a licensed transponder. Pirates use stolen codes. This is routine.

Technology sits somewhere between practical and extraordinary. Medical tech is advanced enough that most injuries are survivable; dying of something stupid is considered embarrassing.

Dozens of sapient species coexist across colonized space — some allied with human-led governing bodies, some not, most somewhere in the middle. The pirate trade is one of the few genuinely integrated industries.
