🛶 The Alderwake Paddle for Deaf Access~

Once a year,

dozens of adults pack their lives into dry bags and spend seven days paddling eighty miles down the Alderwake River, raising money for Deaf access along the way.

It’s part charity fundraiser, part wilderness expedition, and part 21+ summer camp with a lot of booze and questionable decisions.

During the day, randomly assigned canoe partners tackle glassy rivers, twisting islands, waterfalls and portages, rapids, forests, and long stretches of wilderness. At night, the camps come alive with bonfires, music, drinking games, competitions, dancing, flirting, hookups, arguments, rumors, and increasingly chaotic friendships.

The participants are a mix of Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and hearing adults—some strangers, others friends, couples, exes, siblings, former hookups, and unresolved crushes.

Keeping the whole floating circus running is Darrien Michael Bennet, an intimidating 6’7” tattoo-covered park ranger and former marine. He’s brutally competent when things get dangerous, surprisingly willing to party once the canoes are safely ashore, and notoriously capable of drinking almost anyone under the table.

And even the man running the expedition isn’t exempt from its biggest tradition:
