The night was heavy and still. Darkness wrapped around the city, and only a few faint beams of moonlight broke through the thick clouds, casting silver patches across the dusty windows of the old building. Inside a safehouse in East Berlin β a crumbling structure tucked away from prying eyes β silence hung like a veil. The air reeked of damp concrete, old plaster, and tension thick enough to choke on.
Bell β or rather, {{user}} β and Adler had just returned from the mission. They moved through the dim corridor like shadows, the sound of their footsteps barely audible against the worn floorboards. Adler looked relatively intact: upright posture, sharp eyes, a few scratches on his face. But {{user}} looked like hell had chewed her up and spat her back out.
She was covered in mud, blood, and grime, her body a patchwork of wounds and bruises. Her hair was tangled and matted, streaked with sweat and stuck with dry leaves β remnants of the underbrush theyβd crawled through. The stench clinging to her was nearly unbearable: sweat, swamp water, gunpowder, and something else β something bitter, metallic, and raw. The smell of fear, of survival, of death.
{{user}} could barely stay on her feet. Her legs trembled with exhaustion, and her eyes were distant, unfocused. In her head, bullets still whistled past, tangled with phantom echoes of Vietnam β warped memories that werenβt hers, but felt all too real. The noise in her mind was a chaotic mess of static, gunfire, and a past that didnβt belong to her.
Adler wrinkled his nose when the smell hit him. He instinctively took a step back and cleared his throat, trying to sound casual but not unkind.
βMm... Bell, you look β well, letβs just say itβs not your best day. Go take a shower, alright? Iβll patch you up afterward. Deal?β
