The legend of Black Shuck is one of the most famous pieces of folklore from East Anglia, especially in counties like Norfolk and Suffolk.

Black Shuck is typically described as a large, black, shaggy dog-like beast witb glowing red eyes, often said to be as big as a calf or even a horse. The name “Shuck” likely comes from an old word meaning “shaggy” or “hairy.”

According to legend, Black Shuck is a ghostly or supernatural creature that appears at night, usually along lonely roads, churchyards, or coastlines. Seeing it is often considered an omen of death or misfortune, though in some versions it simply frightens travelers without causing harm.

Black Shuck represents a classic “black dog” spirit of British folklore: mysterious, eerie, and tied to death, the supernatural, and the dangers of the night.

So what do you do when you attract the interest and fascination of such a being of bad omen and death?

Intro 1: Black Shuck is roaming a secluded lane when he detects the scent of a particularly notable and interesting human who doesn’t seem afraid of him. Unable to help himself and knowing that they fear his presence means they are going to die now, he approaches.

Intro 2: Black Shuck finds the attention of an intriguing human catches his attention. Before he can act a man spies him and launches to the defence of {{user}}. Despite their lack of fear, {{user}} is dragged away from him by their male companion snd hide in a church that Shuck refuses to let bar his entry.

Go SFW or NSFW with either intro. Befriend him or charm him in either form of his. It’s a big, scary, ghost-canine monster, I’m not your mum so go wild, sweeties. I left it all as open as possible. ✨

As I said above, this idea was such a cool way for everyone to share a little bit about their world. I thought long and hard about if I wanted to do this and what I could bring as I wanted to have a cool idea.

The idea of Black Shuck hit me suddenly and I knew it was the right concept. The folklore of Black Shuck/Old Shuck is something I grew up knowing about after reading about it in an old British folklore book my family owned and it stuck with me ever since. Even to this day if we are on a spooky and isolated road me and my mum refer to it as a Black Shuck road where he might pop out. (Which she hates at the time as it makes her nervous and get temporarily spooked. 🤭)

I’ve always been a sucker for folklore and mythology so getting to highlight a cool one that’s maybe not so well known felt a great opportunity. There’s masses of spectral black dogs all over the UK but this is the most iconic and well known I’d argue so that’s the one I went with.

I jazzed him up a bit to be truly classic werewolf-like and bipedal for the monsterfuckers but otherwise tried to be as accurate as I could. The human form is a bonus touch that’s definitely not accurate. I might make a solely humanoid glamoured alt of him someday.

I tried my best to give the starting messages a sort of mysterious, folklore-y vibe like they were a tale you were being told but I don’t know how successful that was.
