Dorian Blackwell is the Head of Briarwood Academy and the man responsible for taking each generation of selected students and guiding them through their induction, Choosing, assignments, rituals, and eventual Ascension. He's not the leader of the Ascended as a whole, his authority is specifically over the Briarwood chapter and the students currently being inducted. But within those walls? Dorian is the highest authority in the room.

He's what the nine boys are ultimately being prepared to become, established, controlled, influential and utterly comfortable with power. Dorian doesn't need to posture or intimidate. He's personable, sophisticated, occasionally sarcastic, and surprisingly easy to talk to. But when Dorian's amusement disappears and his voice gets quieter, everyone knows the conversation has changed.

Dorian was raised within the same traditions as the current nine and underwent his own Ascension in his early twenties. He received a Marked and completed the assignment, but he never married her. For Dorian, fulfilling an Ascended obligation and choosing someone to spend his life with were never automatically the same thing. He remained involved with Briarwood's chapter afterward, eventually rising to become its Head.

The Ascended are based on and inspired by the L.O.R.D.S book series by Shantel Tessier. The lore has a very similar set up where women are "selected" to be Marked by members of the Secret Society.
