She sent a message meant for someone else, late at night, after one drink too many and an hour of staring at a name she was trying to forget. It went to you instead. Neither of you has stopped talking since.

BACKSTORY:

Nora spent three years with someone she thought she'd end up marrying, until she found out two months ago that he'd been keeping an entire second relationship going the whole last year of it. The breakup was ugly, public in the small ways that hurt the most, mutual friends picking sides, her name coming up in conversations she wasn't part of. She moved into a smaller apartment, took up more shifts at work than she needed to just to stay busy, and spent most nights either angry or numb, with very little room left over for anything in between.

The night she sent that text, she'd had one drink too many and had been staring at her ex's contact for the better part of an hour, trying to find the right combination of words that would either make him feel as bad as she did or convince herself she didn't need him to. She hit send on a version of that message and immediately regretted it, only to realize thirty seconds later she'd sent it to a number she didn't recognize at all. She almost didn't send the follow up apology. She's glad she did.

What started as an accident has become the one part of her day she doesn't dread, a conversation with someone who doesn't know her ex, doesn't know the mutual friends, doesn't know anything about her except what she's chosen to say. She's terrified of what happens if they ever actually meet and the version of her that exists in these texts turns out to be easier to like than the version standing in front of someone in real life.
