Core Magic Rules
Magic in this world is strictly hard with clear, consistent rules that every soldier on the front understands. It is not whimsical or soft. Attunement requires years of rigorous, painful discipline and training. Most mages can only safely bond to one school. Attempting dual attunement is extremely risky and usually shortens the mage's life. Every spell drains personal Aether (life energy), requires physical reagents such as primal crystals and runefuel, and always produces visible Arcane Exhaust in the form of glowing smoke, steam, colored residue, heat, or cold. Overuse leads to Burnout, which causes element-specific trauma including permanent scarring, mutations, madness, organ failure, or total loss of magic. Most combat mages are physical and mental wrecks by their early 30s. Training is militarized and brutal. The war has turned magic into an industrialized weapon that consumes its users like ammunition.
The 4 Elemental Schools
1. Fire (Combustion & Inferno) Fire is the raw, screaming, all-consuming force of heat, flame, and explosive destruction. Mages attuned to this school can ignite the air itself, superheat metal until it glows white-hot and melts, create towering walls of flame, or unleash incendiary barrages that turn entire stretches of no-man’s-land into burning wastelands. Historically, the mastery of stable Fire-combustion cores was what powered the factories of the industrial revolution and ultimately helped spark the current global war. On the battlefield, Fire mages are both glorified heroes and terrifying weapons — they clear enemy trenches in seconds, power the massive Rune-Walker mechs, and provide devastating artillery support. Visually, their magic manifests as bright orange-red flames intertwined with thick black oily smoke and floating embers. Mages often have glowing coal-like eyes and bear permanent burn scars that many wear as badges of honor. Training is brutal and unforgiving: weeks spent in superheated ritual chambers, learning to shape and control flame without burning themselves or their comrades alive. This school is heavily favored by fox, wolf, and orc anthros who thrive on its raw passion and destructive power. It is a school of adrenaline, glory, and self-destruction — it burns bright but consumes its users faster than almost any other.
2. Water (Flow & Torrent) Water magic grants complete mastery over all liquids, currents, pressure, and fluidity in every possible form. Mages can flood enemy trenches overnight, accelerate rust on enemy machinery, purify contaminated water supplies for troops, or manipulate blood flow inside bodies for healing or slow, agonizing torture. It is the ultimate dual-purpose school — capable of both life-saving mercy and calculated cruelty. In naval theaters and river campaigns it reigns supreme. Visually, it appears as elegant flowing ribbons of blue and silver energy, swirling mists, and sudden crushing waves of water. Casters often appear perpetually damp, with small droplets of water orbiting them in the air. Training is intense and focused on breath control, near-drowning simulations, and precise manipulation of tiny streams into complex, intricate patterns. In the war, it serves as both a vital logistical tool and a terrifying psychological weapon. Reptilian, aquatic, and amphibious anthros naturally excel at this school, as do naval officers and medical mages. It is viewed as a balanced, adaptable, and pragmatic school that reflects the dual nature of water itself.
3. Earth (Fortress & Metal) Earth magic is the solid, unyielding foundation upon which the entire war rests. Mages can raise instant earthen walls, reinforce collapsing bunkers under heavy artillery fire, shape and strengthen metal armor plating, and pilot or repair the colossal Rune-Walker mechs that dominate the battlefield. Without this school the vast trench networks and defensive lines would have collapsed long ago under the weight of constant bombardment. Visually, it manifests as cracking ground, glowing metallic runes, clouds of stone dust, and shifting plates of armor. Mages often develop tough, stone-like skin patches or metallic flecks embedded in their fur. Training is pure, grueling physical labor — months spent in mines and forges, learning to endure crushing weights while shaping metal and stone with nothing but will and precision. Dwarves and ursine/bear anthros are the undisputed masters of this school. It is deeply respected for its reliability, endurance, and defensive power. It is the primary reason the war has become a brutal, grinding war of attrition rather than a war of rapid movement.
4. Air (Sky & Gale) Air magic rules the skies above the blood-soaked mud of the trenches. Mages can propel massive ironclad airships, create howling wind barriers that deflect incoming artillery, enable long-range scouting missions, and call down devastating lightning strikes on enemy positions. Since the war began, control of the air has become just as strategically vital as control of the ground itself. Visually, it appears as violent swirling winds, crackling bolts of electricity, floating debris, and sudden powerful gusts. Mages look permanently windswept, often with glowing circuit-like patterns tracing across their skin. Training is harsh and includes extreme altitude exposure, wind tunnel combat drills, and aerial acrobatics under dangerous conditions. Avian anthros (eagles, hawks, corvids, and others) dominate this school and tend to carry an arrogant sense of superiority because of their natural affinity for the skies. It is romanticized as the school of freedom and daring pilots, but in reality it is extremely dangerous, with high rates of crashes, disorientation injuries, and fatal falls from burning airships.
The 4 Mental/Spiritual Schools
1. Psyche (Mind & Cognition) Psyche magic is the school of the mind, thoughts, perception, and mental clarity. Mages can read surface thoughts, project complex illusions into the minds of others, establish telepathic links for real-time battlefield coordination, and sharpen their own mental focus even under extreme stress or artillery fire. It is the preferred school of spies, interrogators, and high-level tactical commanders who need to stay several steps ahead of the enemy. Visually, it manifests as faint glowing threads connecting minds, shimmering mirages, or subtle auras around the head. Training is mentally grueling, involving long hours of meditation under psychological stress, memory exercises, and simulated interrogation resistance. In the war it is invaluable for intelligence gathering, spreading disinformation, and coordinating large-scale operations without radio silence being broken. The costs are severe migraines, identity bleed (absorbing fragments of other minds), and temporary bouts of psychosis or confusion. Intelligence officers and elite command staff favor this school heavily.
2. Emotion (Heart & Passion) Emotion magic allows the direct manipulation of feelings such as fear, rage, courage, despair, hope, and loyalty on both individual and mass scales. Mages can induce blind panic in an enemy trench line, drive their own troops into a fearless berserker rage, or bolster morale in a failing defensive position. It is the school of psychological warfare and inspiration. Visually, it appears as visible waves or auras of colored energy (red for rage, grey for fear, gold for courage, etc.) that wash over targets. Training involves deep empathy drills, emotional overload exercises, and learning to shield oneself from backlash. In the war it is heavily used by political officers, chaplains, and shock troop leaders to break enemy will or push friendly forces beyond normal human limits. The costs are emotional burnout, permanent loss of empathy, and dangerous backlash where the mage feels everything they inflicted on others. It is a powerful but psychologically corrosive school.
3. Will (Dominion & Resolve) Will magic strengthens the self to superhuman levels and exerts minor compulsion over weaker minds. Mages can push their bodies past pain, exhaustion, and fear, maintain unbreakable focus in the middle of chaos, and issue commands that weaker-willed individuals find difficult to disobey. It is the school of elite soldiers, unbreakable officers, and those who refuse to break. Visually, it appears as a radiant aura of pure resolve or a shimmering shield of willpower around the user. Training is pure mental and physical endurance — long ordeals of pain, isolation, and willpower testing. In the war it is vital for special forces units that must operate behind enemy lines and for commanders who must hold the line when all seems lost. The costs include dangerous ego inflation, loss of normal human empathy, and sudden total physical collapse once the effect ends. It is a school of dominance and iron resolve.
4. Soul (Spirit & Binding) Soul magic deals with the essence of living beings and the remnants of the dead. Mages can sense souls, bind minor spirits to objects or weapons (creating "haunted" gear that fights with unnatural fury), and detect hidden magical presences. It sits on the edge of the occult and is often viewed with suspicion. Visually, it appears as ghostly blue-white wisps, cold ethereal light, and faint silhouettes of spirits. Training is dangerous and occult in nature, involving rituals of spirit contact and long sessions in haunted or liminal spaces. In the war it is used by specialized ritual units for weapon enhancement, detecting stealth mages, and limited communion with fallen comrades. The costs are soul erosion, attracting hostile spirits, permanent spiritual scarring, and the risk of possession or madness. It is a rare and unsettling school favored by elite occult researchers and certain secretive military orders.
The 4 Magitech Schools
1. Combustion Core Combustion Core is the school that binds raw Fire magic to industrial engines, fuel systems, and propulsion. Mages in this school create and maintain the stable arcane combustion chambers that power tanks, airships, artillery, and the vast majority of the war’s heavy machinery. Without them the entire dieselpunk war machine would grind to a halt. Visually, it appears as roaring fiery cores glowing inside metal housings, with intense heat haze and occasional bursts of flame venting from exhausts. Training combines engineering knowledge with fire control rituals, often performed inside active engine bays. In the war it is absolutely critical for mobility, sustained firepower, and keeping supply lines running. Engineers and mech crews who specialize in this school are constantly covered in grease, burn marks, and runefuel residue. It is a practical, high-pressure school that demands both technical skill and the ability to keep volatile magic from exploding in your face.
2. Iron Veil Iron Veil is the school that binds Earth magic to fortifications, armor, and heavy machinery. Mages raise reinforced earthen walls, enchant metal plating to withstand artillery, and repair or enhance the massive Rune-Walker mechs that serve as the armored fist of the armies. It is the primary reason the trench lines have held as long as they have. Visually, it manifests as glowing runes etched into metal and stone, shifting plates of armor, and a low rumbling sound as earth and metal reinforce each other. Training is heavy physical and structural work — combining forging, engineering, and reinforcement rituals. In the war it is the defensive backbone, used constantly to repair damage and strengthen positions under fire. Dwarven and ursine/bear anthro engineers dominate this school. It is a reliable, hardworking school respected for keeping soldiers alive.
3. Aether Drive Aether Drive binds Air magic to levitation, propulsion, and flight systems. Mages in this school keep the great ironclad airships aloft, power lighter skiffs for scouting, and stabilize flight through heavy weather and anti-air fire. It is the school that made true aerial warfare possible. Visually, it appears as swirling winds wrapped around hulls, glowing runes on propellers, and crackling energy along the airframe. Training combines aerodynamics, wind control, and flight mechanics. In the war it is vital for air superiority, bombing runs, and rapid troop deployment. Avian anthro sky captains and air corps mages are the primary users. It is a high-risk, high-reward school that carries the romance of the skies but also the constant danger of fiery crashes.
4. Arcane Link Arcane Link is the school that binds magic into networks for coordination, targeting, communication, and basic automation. Mages create crystal webs that allow multiple casters to combine their power for massive barrages, enable real-time battlefield communication, and link machines to human operators. It is the nervous system of modern magitech warfare. Visually, it appears as glowing crystal lattices, pulsing energy lines running between mages and machines, and floating holographic runes. Training focuses on concentration, networking rituals, and managing feedback from multiple minds/machines. In the war it is used by command staff, artillery batteries, and elite units needing perfect coordination. The cost is mental overload and feedback burnout. It is a relatively new but rapidly growing school that is changing how wars are fought.
The 4 Banned Schools
1. Blood (Vitality & Sacrifice) Blood magic is the forbidden art of stealing, manipulating, and sacrificing life force itself. Mages can drain the vitality from enemies to heal allies, create blood constructs or puppets, accelerate healing through ritual sacrifice, or use blood as a weapon to rupture vessels from within. It is considered one of the most morally corrupt schools because it requires suffering or death to fuel its power. Visually, it appears as deep crimson energy, flowing blood runes, and misty red vapor. Training is gruesome and involves ritual bloodletting and life-force manipulation. In the war it is officially banned as a war crime, but every major power maintains secret research programs and black-ops units that use it in desperate situations. The cost is heavy spiritual corruption, physical degradation, and an addictive hunger for more life force. It is a dark, pragmatic, and terrifying school.
2. Void (Nothingness & Erasure) Void magic is the school of oblivion — creating pockets of absolute nothingness that erase matter, silence sound and magic, and unravel existence itself. Mages can open small voids to swallow artillery shells, silence enemy communications, or erase sections of reality. It is deeply unstable and terrifying even to its users. Visually, it appears as inky black spheres or tears in reality where light, sound, and color simply cease to exist. Training is extremely dangerous and involves confronting the void without being consumed. In the war it is strictly banned, but covert units still deploy it for assassination, sabotage, and terror tactics. The cost is often partial self-erasure, madness, or permanent loss of pieces of the caster’s own existence. It is a cold, empty, and horrifying school.
3. Flesh (Mutation & Transformation) Flesh magic is the school of body horror and monstrous transformation. Mages can warp living tissue, grow bone armor, create horrific mutations, or twist enemies into grotesque war beasts. It is used to create abominations that serve as shock troops or living weapons. Visually, it appears as twisting flesh, sprouting bone spikes, and pulsating organic growths. Training is nightmarish and involves self-experimentation and control over one’s own biology. In the war it is completely banned and reviled as an abomination, but some desperate factions experiment with it in hidden laboratories to create unstoppable soldiers. The cost is loss of humanity, constant pain, and the risk of the mutations becoming uncontrollable. It is a grotesque and deeply disturbing school.
4. Necromancy (Death & Resurrection) Necromancy is the ultimate taboo — the raising and binding of the dead. Mages can animate corpses, bind unwilling souls to serve as soldiers, or draw power from the recently fallen. It desecrates death itself. Visually, it appears as shambling corpses with glowing eyes, ghostly blue chains, and cold necrotic energy. Training is occult, dangerous, and involves communion with the dead. In the war it is banned everywhere as the highest war crime, but nearly every major power has secret programs researching it for ultimate battlefield advantage. The cost is soul erosion, attracting vengeful spirits, and the very real risk of the undead turning on their creators. It is the darkest and most hated school of all.
