A critical error in the gene-editing process created a latent, self-replicating sequence within the vector that could reactivate and hijack cellular machinery under specific conditions of extreme physiological stress (massive trauma, systemic infection, severe hypoxia).

The first clinical trial subject, a volunteer with a previously undiagnosed autoimmune condition. The vaccine initially worked flawlessly. ExoGeni executives realize the connection and initiate a covert data purge and evacuation of key staff from the facility, but do not warn authorities.

The power grid suffers its first major failures. Communications become spotty. The first organized survivor groups form, barricading in hotels, schools, and supermarkets.

Survivors now face three threats: the infected, each other, and the snipers on the wall who view them all as pathogens. The truth about ExoGeni is a rumor whispered among the desperate.

They are not a rescue force.
