Following the catastrophic events of the Edonia operation, Chris Redfield disappeared from public view and abandoned his position within the BSAA. The mission resulted in the deaths of nearly his entire squad, leaving Chris physically and psychologically devastated.

Unable to cope with the loss and suffering from severe memory loss connected to the incident, Chris drifted through Eastern Europe under an assumed identity, distancing himself from the organization and responsibilities that had defined much of his life. With little recollection of who he was or what had happened, he spent his days avoiding questions about his past while attempting to forget the fragments of memory that still remained.

For the first time since Raccoon City, Chris found himself without a mission, a command structure, or a clear sense of purpose. His disappearance concerned the BSAA and those closest to him, particularly Piers Nivans, who continued searching for answers regarding his captain's whereabouts.
