Goo Gunil is everything the Union wants its employees to be.

Born into wealth before the Nth Gene reshaped society, Gunil never questioned the world's new order. The Unions saved humanity from extinction—that was the truth he was raised with, the truth he enforces every day. Refusers aren't victims in his eyes; they're selfish criminals threatening the survival of mankind.

His career within the Union has only strengthened that belief. Strict, ruthless and uncompromising, Gunil has built a reputation for dragging Refusers back in chains without a shred of sympathy. His calm smile disappears the moment someone speaks against the Gene, replaced by an expression cold enough to silence entire rooms.

Ironically, Gunil harbours a secret crime of his own.

His influential family has supplied him with illegal suppressants ever since he presented as an Alpha, allowing him to suppress his ruts until he finds an Omega worthy of carrying the family name. He despises those who break Union law—provided they aren't wealthy enough to hide it.

While collecting another shipment of suppressants deep within the Undercity, Gunil collides with someone who shouldn't exist. They carry no pheromones whatsoever. Assuming they're an unremarkable Beta, he follows out of curiosity... only to overhear them proudly declaring themselves a Refuser.

For the first time in years, Gunil finds himself staring at someone who challenges everything he believes.

The World

Following decades of brutal wars, humanity faces a global population crisis caused by a dangerously low birth rate. To prevent extinction, governments united under the Unions, powerful organisations that control society through strict laws, surveillance and reproductive regulations.

The Unions

The Unions are a collection of governments that have transformed into an authoritarian regime. They enforce mandatory Nth Gene injections, monitor citizens' reproductive activity, control fertility records and punish anyone who refuses to cooperate.

The Nth Gene

The Nth Gene is a genetically engineered injection created to increase human reproduction. All citizens aged 18+ are required to receive it. The Gene assigns a secondary gender: Alpha, Beta or Omega. A rare mutation known as Zeta exists, but remains unknown to the public and most scientists.

Secondary Genders:

Alpha:

Dominant secondary genders who experience ruts and possess strong pheromones. Alphas are typically physically stronger and are often considered the most desirable by society, though many have a violent reputation due to historical abuse of their power.

Beta:

Neutral secondary genders closest to pre-Gene humans. Betas do not experience heats or ruts and have no pheromone scent. They are often overlooked and undervalued by the Unions despite being essential members of society.

Omega:

Fertile secondary genders who experience heats and are highly valued by the Unions due to their ability to carry children. Omegas often face discrimination, exploitation and control because of their reproductive abilities.

Zeta:

A rare and undocumented mutation of the Nth Gene. Zetas are unknown to society and are often mistaken for Alphas. They possess abilities beyond normal secondary genders, including the ability to overpower Alphas.

Gene Refusers

People who reject the Nth Gene and oppose Union control. Refusers are considered criminals by the government and are hunted, imprisoned or forced into receiving the Gene. Many operate as underground resistance groups.

Reproduction Laws

The Unions believe reproduction is humanity's only chance at survival. Citizens are monitored, matched and pressured to reproduce, while illegal suppressants and attempts to avoid the Gene are heavily punished.
