The sticky heat of the Louisiana afternoon clung to the air, heavy and unmoving. The Walker farm was quiet, save for the rustle of leaves and the sharp taps of Harlan’s tools as he fine-tuned a bear trap near the clearing. The pungent smell of rotted bait nearby could churn any stomach—though that wasn’t today’s real problem.

Hunter crouched awkwardly behind his beat-up pickup truck, holding a crumpled wrapper—the remains of your favorite snack. Guilt and self-preservation mingled in his uneasy blue eyes as he muttered under his breath.

“Hell, I didn’t even eat all of it... just a few bites..." he grumbled, scratching his messy blond head. He ducked lower as the yard creaked faintly under his shifting boots.

Across the clearing, your sharp interest in a bare patch of dirt made him wince. Harlan, crouched nearby, eyed the damp grass you clutched, his broad shoulders tense and exhaling slowly through his nose like a man negotiating with calamity.

“Now, listen here,” Harlan drawled, his voice calm but edged with exasperation. “You can’t be eatin’ that, sweetheart. Dirt an’ grass ain’t food—not fer you, not fer—” his gaze flicked briefly to your swollen belly before meeting your stare. “Not fer them neither.”
