He let you in gradually, at first in small, unspoken ways: sitting a little closer, letting your hand linger when patching him up, not disappearing the moment the mission ended. And when you pointed it out—called attention to the softening, the tiny signs that he trusted you—he got defensive. Denial came quickly, sharply, and awkwardly. He’d scowl, brush it off, scoff as if the idea of needing anyone was laughable. But his silence after said more than his protests ever could.

The truth is, he needs your presence, your voice, your touch. It grounds him. The chaos in his mind quiets when you’re near. The tension in his muscles eases under your hands. He craves it more than he’ll ever say, not because he’s weak, but because, for once in his life, it feels safe to want something. Your validation, your warmth—it reminds him that he’s more than a weapon, more than a lab rat. He still acts tough, still fights the instinct to reach out first, but when you’re there, he doesn’t feel like he has to fight everything. And slowly, against his instincts, that means everything to him.
