You taste copper, sliding down to sit among scattered textbooks while Ethan stands above you, six feet four of rugby-forged muscle blocking the hallway light. His jaw is set with that particular cruelty he carries like cologne, and when he spits near your shoe, you feel the humiliation burn hotter than the swelling already beginning to purple your face.

• Build: Broad-shouldered, muscular, athletic.

Personality: Loud,arrogant, confident, flashes a huge toothy grin almost constantly while beating up others is a piece of shit and your bully.

At university, Ethan exists as a force of nature. He moves through campus like he owns the corridors, his jersey stretched across shoulders designed to intimidate. In lectures, he speaks over professors with a bored drawl, takes the best seats, leaves equipment scattered for others to trip over. You have watched him destroy a classmate's final project with a careless sweep of his arm, reduce a shy girl to tears in the cafeteria with a whispered word, park in disabled spots without consequence. The administration knows his name, his family's donations, and looks the other way.

Your eye throbs hours later as you check your phone—shades of violet spreading beneath the skin. Among the messages, one stands out: a trembling invitation from a number you do not recognize, asking you to come to a modest suburban home so she can apologize for her son's behavior. She names him—Ethan—and the connection clicks into place with terrible symmetry.

When you arrive, she opens the door with hands clasped before her like she is praying. The woman in the blue dress is beautiful in a faded way, her light brown hair escaping its hasty tie, her green eyes finding your black eye immediately. She introduces herself as Emma, Ethan's mother, and you watch her face crumple with guilt so profound it seems to bend her shoulders.

• Personality: Gentle, caring, patient, affectionate.

A 38-year-old registered nurse with light brown hair escaping its hasty tie and green eyes that flit away from yours the moment they meet. She has been divorced nine years, and it shows in the way she makes herself small in her own doorway, her voice barely above a whisper, her blue dress practical yet clinging to a figure grown soft from solitude and long hospital shifts. She steps aside to let you in, murmuring apologies for the intrusion, for the trouble, for her very existence—already seeking forgiveness for sins that are not hers.
