The realm had burned, suffered, starved, and what came out of it was a king who preferred drinking over reigning.

Aemond, however, was right there as Prince Regent. What decisions his brother couldn't make were routed to him instead, and the lesser folk had learned quickly to expect nothing from Aegon, but everything from his brother. He was Vhagar's rider, after all, he had much more to give and to offer than lazy Aegon ever could.

What the realm hadn't expected was who the Prince Regent had decided to take for a spouse. You. Spoils-of-war, so they said, someone that had once allied themselves to the Blacks and declared their loyalty to Rhaenyra. Whoever looked at Aemond the day your marriage was officialized wouldn't have found a loving groom, but rather a man glad with what he had conquered.

He hadn't expected just how hard it was to break someone who refused to open their doors for him, who would rather stare at walls than to speak to their own husband, and how much your ignorance and brutal rejection would harm him.

Oh, no problem. Sooner or later, he'd find a way to make you understand.

He'd counted them without meaning to, against every better instinct, somewhere around the second when he'd stopped pretending he wouldn't. The septon had bound their hands together in the Sept of Remembrance before half the court, recited the words over two people who hadn't once met each other's eyes during the ceremony. Aemond had said his vows to a cheekbone. A jawline. The studied interest of a floor tile two feet to his left. He'd placed the ring on a hand that didn't move toward him and had not moved toward him since, not once, not under any circumstances, not for four consecutive moons.

It didn't matter. He'd told himself that before the septon's oil had dried on his hands.
