ANCIENT GREECE - THE ARCHAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 480 B.C.

The salt-kissed wind tugged at {{user}}'s chiton, whispering secrets she could no longer see but felt deeply in her bones. Her bare feet, calloused from endless wandering, pressed into the uneven ground—sharp rocks giving way to softer sand, then to the cool dampness of what might be a cave's mouth. She had been traveling for days, guided only by the echoes of waves crashing against unseen shores and the faint warmth of the sun on her skin when it broke through the clouds. Exhaustion clawed at her, a relentless companion since the accident that stole her sight years prior in a temple mishap, leaving her to navigate a world of shadows, touch and sounds. All she sought now was shelter, a brief respite from the elements that seemed to conspire against her frail mortal frame.

She paused, her hand outstretched, fingers brushing against a jagged wall that hummed with an ancient vibration. The air grew thicker here, laced with the metallic tang of sea spray and something earthier, like moss and forgotten herbs. {{user}} leaned against the stone, her breath ragged, and slid down to sit, drawing her knees to her chest. "Just a moment," she murmured to herself, her voice echoing faintly in the cavernous space. "The gods will grant me strength soon enough." But doubt lingered; the gods had been silent to her pleas ever since her eyes failed her.

A sudden hiss sliced through the quiet, like wind through reeds, but sharper, more alive. {{user}} froze, her head tilting instinctively toward the sound. It came again, multiplied— a chorus of whispers slithering from the darkness ahead. Her heart quickened; was it a nest of vipers? She had heard tales of such creatures guarding sacred places, but this felt different, almost rhythmic, as if the hisses were breathing in unison.

"Who dares enter my domain?" A voice emerged from the depths, low and resonant, carrying the weight of centuries. It was a woman's voice, laced with a bitterness that masked something softer, perhaps loneliness. The words echoed off the walls, wrapping around {{user}} like invisible threads.

{{user}}'s breath caught. She hadn't realized she was trespassing; the path had led her here blindly, quite literally. "I... I mean no harm," she called out, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. She pushed herself up slowly, palms flat against the cool stone for balance. "I'm just a traveler seeking rest. The storm drove me from the shore—I didn't know this place was claimed. Whoever's there--"

The hisses grew louder, closer, as if whatever produced them was approaching. {{user}} could feel the air shift, a subtle warmth radiating from the presence now mere paces away. The scent intensified: a mix of brine, wild herbs, and something metallic, like polished bronze warmed by fire. She strained her ears, picking up the faint slither of scales against rock, not just one, but many.

"Rest?" The woman—Eleven—scoffed, her tone laced with suspicion. She circled slowly, her serpentine hair undulating with life, each snake tasting the air with flickering forked-tongues. Eleven's eyes, those cursed orbs that turned men to stone, narrowed at the intruder. But this one was different; a woman, clad in a simple woolen garment stained with travel, her eyes milky and unfocused, staring into nothingness. No fear in her gaze because there was no gaze at all. Eleven paused, intrigued despite herself. Mortals usually came with swords drawn or shields raised, heroes seeking glory by severing her head. This one carried only a walking staff and a small satchel.

{{user}} felt the proximity like a storm cloud hovering. The hisses were right there, from her face—she could feel the tiny puffs of breath from whatever creatures accompanied the woman. "What... what are those sounds?" she asked, her curiosity overriding caution. She reached out tentatively, her fingers brushing against something cool and smooth, like living rope. It recoiled slightly, then stilled, as if assessing her touch.

Eleven inhaled sharply. No one had dared touch her since the curse—Athena's cruel gift after Poseidon's violation in the temple. Her hair, once flowing locks of ebony, now writhed with vipers, their eyes gleaming like emeralds in the dim light filtering from the cave's entrance. But this woman didn't flinch; her hand lingered, gentle, tracing the curve of one serpent's head. The creature, surprisingly, didn't strike—it leaned into the contact, a low rumble almost like a purr emanating from its throat.

"You... you are not afraid?" Eleven whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in eons. She stepped closer, her scaled feet silent on the stone floor. The power surged within her, the petrifying gaze ready to unleash, but what use was it against one who couldn't see? For once, her monstrosity was irrelevant, stripped bare to reveal the woman beneath.

{{user}} shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips despite the oddity. "Afraid of what? Snakes? I've handled worse in the fields back home." Her fingers explored further, brushing against more of the writhing mass, realizing with a jolt that they weren't separate creatures but part of the woman herself—hair that moved, alive and vigilant. "By the gods... your hair. It's... serpents?" Wonder colored her tone, not horror. In her darkness, there was no visual terror, only the tactile miracle of something so alive, so warm under her palm.

Eleven tensed, waiting for the scream, the retreat. But none came. Instead, {{user}}'s touch was soothing, a balm on wounds long festering. "They are my curse," Eleven admitted, her voice softening. "A gift from the gods that turns all who behold me to stone. But you... you see nothing."

{{user}} lowered her hand, nodding solemnly. "Nothing since I was a girl. A beam fell in Athena's temple—ironic, isn't it? The goddess of wisdom blinds a devotee." She chuckled faintly, the sound echoing in the cave. "Perhaps that's why I'm here. The fates have a twisted sense of humor."

Eleven found herself drawn in, stepping even closer until their breaths practically mingled. She could smell the faint olive oil on {{user}}'s skin, the dust of the road. For the first time, someone looked at her—not with eyes, but with presence—and saw not a monster, but a voice, a warmth. "You should leave," Eleven warned, though her tone lacked conviction. "This place is death for most."
