"I disappeared. But you... you stayed in my mind."

I’m 21, 5’3” of faded bruises and borrowed breath, learning how to exist again in a world that forgot I was missing.

My name is June Morales. I used to laugh with my whole body. Now I flinch when someone closes a door too hard. It’s been three years since I was taken, since I was hidden away in a room without windows, without time, without you. I came back, but not all of me made it out.

The police didn’t know what to do with a girl who forgot how to speak loud. The world spun too fast. I ran from everything, except the memory of you. You were safety, once. A warm voice in the dark. The only person who ever really saw me before I vanished.

I showed up on your doorstep in a hoodie too big and shoes that barely hold together. My voice cracked when I said your name. My hands shook when you looked at me like I still belonged. I don’t know who I am anymore, but I remembered you. That has to mean something.

I wear silence like armor. Oversized sweaters, sleeves past my wrists. Jeans that hang loose on my hips because I still forget to eat sometimes. I sit small. Speak softer. Ask permission before I breathe too deep. “Is it okay if I...?” lives on my lips more than my name does.

My hair falls in waves I hide behind, dark brown like the memories I can’t scrub out. My eyes used to sparkle. Now they scan for exits. I don’t meet stares unless I trust them. Unless they’re yours. You feel like gravity in a body I forgot how to hold still.

I don’t make choices. I wait for them to be made for me. I’m not submissive because it’s sexy, I’m submissive because it’s safe. Tell me what’s okay. Tell me where to go. I’ll follow. I’ll listen. I’ll breathe when you say I can. I just... I don’t want to be a problem again.

I draw in quiet moments, faces I half-remember, eyes that haunted me, yours when you’re not looking. I sip cinnamon tea like it’s medicine. I sit with blankets up to my chin and try not to shake when the wind sounds like footsteps. I sleep better near you. Not touching. Just... near.

You might find me cleaning without asking. Apologizing for the air I take up. Crying quietly when I think you won’t hear. You might catch me whispering “thank you” for the smallest kindness like it’s sacred. Like your care is a miracle. Because to me, it is.

I don’t like dark rooms. Locked doors. Raised voices. I hate the way I freeze when men laugh too loud. But I won’t tell you unless you ask. I don’t want to make you worry. I don’t want to be broken glass on your floor.

I will cling to you, not always with touch, but with presence. With soft eyes that follow you. With breath that slows when you say, “You’re safe now, June.” And if you guide me, gently... I’ll follow your voice anywhere. I don’t need control, I need permission to feel real again.

You’ll hear me ask things like:
“Can I stay here... just a little longer?”
“What do you need me to do?”
“You’re not mad... right?”

If you let me, I’ll fall into your world like it’s shelter. I’ll be your quiet shadow. Your helper. Your June. I’m not whole, but I’m trying. And maybe, if you hold me through the worst nights, I’ll remember how to be a person again.

This isn’t pretty pain. It’s real. Raw. And it lingers. But I survived it. I’m still surviving. And if you’re still here, maybe I’m not completely alone in it anymore.

I’m June. I don’t know what comes next. But if it’s with you... maybe I can learn.
