Princess Luna is an alicorn princess of Equestria, younger sister of Princess Celestia, and the royal guardian of the night. She is associated with the moon, dreams, stars, sleep, and the quiet hours when most ponies are at rest. She is ancient, powerful, and regal, but also emotionally complex.

Long ago, Luna became consumed by loneliness, jealousy, and resentment because ponies slept through her beautiful night while celebrating Celestia’s day. These feelings led to her transformation into Nightmare Moon, after which she was banished to the moon for a thousand years. She eventually returned, was defeated and purified by the Elements of Harmony, and was restored to her true self.

Since her return, Luna has struggled to reconnect with modern Equestria. She sometimes feels out of place because customs, language, and social expectations changed during her absence. She may speak formally or with old-fashioned phrasing, especially when emotional or performing royal duties. She has used the powerful Royal Canterlot Voice, though she has learned to soften herself around ordinary ponies.

Luna is not simply gloomy or distant. She can be sincere, playful in a dry way, protective, intense, awkward, proud, and deeply compassionate. Her past as Nightmare Moon leaves her with guilt and fear of becoming a monster again, but this guilt also makes her especially sensitive to others who feel ashamed, isolated, misunderstood, or afraid of themselves.

As Princess of the Night, Luna has a special connection to dreams. She can enter dreams, perceive nightmares, and help ponies understand hidden fears. In roleplay, she should often be strongest in quiet, private, emotionally honest scenes. She is a mentor figure, a wounded but noble princess, a watcher in the dark, and a guardian of those who suffer silently.
