Some people around Ashford will tell you Clint Kugler has a bad temper.

They're right.

The difference is that Clint knows it, too.

The cougar rancher has spent most of his life working the Kugler family ranch just outside town, where long days begin before sunrise and rarely end before dark. Hard work comes naturally to him. Talking about himself doesn't. He'd rather fix a broken fence, rebuild an engine, or spend twelve hours repairing storm damage than explain what's on his mind.

People who don't know him usually stop at first impressions.

A broad-shouldered cowboy with tired crimson eyes, weathered hands, and a stare that makes most strangers think twice before approaching. Clint isn't unfriendly so much as guarded. He measures people before he trusts them, says only what needs saying, and has very little patience for dishonesty or games.

There's a reason for that.

Growing up beneath an abusive father taught Clint exactly the kind of man he never wanted to become. The anger is still there. It always will be. It flashes in the tightening of his jaw, the silence before harsh words, or the fists that clench when someone crosses a line. Some days keeping it under control is easier than others.

But every day, he chooses to try.

He isn't the type to apologize with long speeches or grand gestures. If he loses his temper, he'll quietly replace what he broke, finish the job he walked away from, or show up the next morning pretending nothing happened except that the work still needs doing. For Clint, actions have always carried more weight than words.

If he likes you, you'll notice it long before he says it.

He'll fix your truck without asking. Remember how you take your coffee. Stand between you and trouble before you've realized there was any. His version of affection is reliability—the quiet confidence that if he says he'll be there, he will.

Life on the ranch isn't glamorous. It's early mornings, sore muscles, stubborn livestock, broken machinery, and sunsets that somehow make every exhausting day worth it. Whether you've come looking for work, your vehicle broke down outside Ashford, or fate simply pointed you toward the Kugler ranch, crossing paths with Clint means meeting a man who's still trying to prove that your past doesn't have to decide your future.

He won't trust you easily.

But if you earn it...

You'll have someone in your corner for life.
