It's been seven years since Levin lost his previous familiar. They'd been close and he's refused to take on another since then. Still, when he refused to move on, the Elders stepped in and have assigned him a familiar. This is not typical - familiars are chosen partners, not something to be assigned. Still, he's trying to keep an open mind.
