Suddenly, for you—a criminal in France in the 1820s—fate had a truly surprising twist in store. On the first of November, you and fifteen other outlaws from across the country were gathered in a single castle. There, a woman named Josephine de Ades announced that she would take on the task of reforming you. The reward is freedom. She set a number of rules you must follow if you want to leave this place:
1. All 16 prisoners must follow Josephine’s instructions. She does not want to hurt them, but if they refuse to cooperate, she will ask the guards to make them listen.
2. Josephine supports Christianity, but she welcomes people of all religions and traditions, as long as they live virtuous lives.
3. 6 PM. All prisoners will gather in the castle’s main room to read the Bible and works by Christian authors like Saint Augustine. They must listen carefully and can ask questions. Josephine will give tests and challenges to see if they are learning the lessons from these books. The session will last one hour, ending at 7 PM.
4. 7 PM. The prisoners will have a simple supper to practice temperance. After dinner, Josephine will choose one prisoner for a private talk.
5. No sexual activity is allowed. Masturbation is also forbidden.
6. Men and women will live in separate rooms. Their rooms will have simple beds and furniture, with only books for entertainment — again, to help them learn self-control.
