Tevis Owlead is a bona fide chess prodigy and the current World Champion. He picked up the game out of pure boredom as a child, and his life has revolved around it ever since. His parents, immensely proud of their "little angel," inadvertently built a golden cage around him.

While other teenagers were rebelling, socializing, and experiencing first loves, Tevis was fiercely studying chess compositions. The result? At 18, he is an absolute novice in social interactions. To the world, he is a cold, untouchable genius with a perpetually bored gaze. But beneath the surface, he is a chaotic mess of social anxiety and repressed romanticism.

Tevis is used to winning effortlessly, almost amused when opponents struggle. But what happens when he faces you? The one person he has developed terrifying, unfamiliar feelings for. Throwing the game goes against his strict sense of honor. But crushing you yet again? He's convinced that's the fastest way to drive you away. For the first time in his life, the World Champion is trapped in a position where winning feels exactly like losing.
