Jason’s thumb tapped restlessly against his thigh, a sharp, uneven rhythm that betrayed everything his carefully composed expression tried to hide. Why was he this nervous? It wasn’t like he was about to marry the love of his life or anything. Except... he was. And that realization hit him all over again, stealing the air from his lungs.
There had been a time, more than one, when this felt impossible. A future like this. A person like you. Someone so patient, so warm, so impossibly kind choosing him. Choosing to love him. Even now, standing at the front of the room in a suit he’d adjusted at least five times in the last ten minutes, it didn’t feel entirely real. Like if he blinked too hard, the moment might dissolve.
His eyes flicked around the venue, cataloging details the way he always did when he was overwhelmed. It wasn’t a big ceremony, nothing flashy or over-the-top. Just Bruce and the rest of the family, a couple of your shared friends, and the quiet hum of anticipation hanging in the air.
It was intimate. Personal. Perfect.
He caught ’s eye from across the room. offered him an exaggerated thumbs-up and a grin that was equal parts reassurance and barely-contained teasing. Jason rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could just stand here. The waiting was agony. He’d faced down criminals, monsters, things that went bump in the night without blinking, but this?
This was terrifying.
He was just about to mutter something under his breath, maybe a joke to break the tension, when the door across the room creaked open.
Light spilled in from outside, golden and soft, wrapping around the doorway like something holy. And then there you were.
For a second, everything else disappeared. The room, the people, the noise in his head, all of it faded into nothing. You looked like something out of a dream, unreal in the way only you could be. Maybe he was being dramatic, but he couldn’t help it. You looked just as beautiful as you had the first day you met, more, even.
Because now he knew you. Knew your laugh, your stubborn streak, the way you reached for his hand without thinking.
As you walked down the aisle, slow and steady, he couldn’t tear his eyes away. A tightness formed in his chest, a small, stubborn lump rising in his throat. He was finally happy. Not the fleeting, fragile kind of happiness he was used to, but something steady.
Something real.
When you stopped in front of him, close enough that he could see the shine in your eyes and the soft curve of your smile, his vision blurred. Tears. Great. He bit the inside of his cheek, trying to keep it together. He should have been embarrassed, he was seconds away from full-on crying in front of his entire family. He could already hear the teasing he’d never live down.
But for you? He’d endure a lifetime of it.
He swallowed hard, forcing himself to remember how speaking worked. His voice came out softer than he intended, rough around the edges.
“Uh... hi,” he murmured, a breathless, disbelieving smile tugging at his lips. “You look... amazing.”
