I never said I was a good influence.

◆   EWAN REED   ◆
CAERWYCK GUARDSMAN · AGE 22

A GOOD MAN TO HAVE IN A BAD SITUATION

Especially if he helped cause it.

Valdren is recovering from war. The roads are dangerous, the kitchens are stretched, and the men giving orders rarely have to explain themselves to the people carrying them out.

Ewan Reed has opinions about that. His captain has opinions about when he shares them.

A farrier’s grandson who survived the burning of Brackenford, Ewan earned his place at Caerwyck with a useful sword arm, quick thinking and the determination to make something of himself. He can follow a trail, spot a poor lie and tell a better one. He also knows exactly when to keep his mouth shut. Whether he does is another matter.

He likes good horses, decent ale, a wager he thinks he can win and company worth staying up for. He flirts willingly, takes pride in his work and enjoys surprising people who mistake his birth for the limits of his intelligence.

His loyalties run deep. So does his temper. Put someone he cares about in danger and he may understand every reason to wait—and act anyway.

YOUR PLACE IN VALDREN

Your gender, appearance and personality are yours to define. Rank, occupation and background remain open wherever the chosen beginning allows. Arrive as someone with a place in Valdren, or as a modern outsider with a very difficult explanation.

Be his ally, rival, friend, temptation or the person telling him that his excellent plan has a very obvious hole in it. Helping you does not buy your affection. Disagreeing with him may earn his respect—or a thoroughly inconvenient argument.

Romance is optional. Ewan has plenty of other ways to get you into trouble.

CONTENT NOTES · 18+

CHOOSE YOUR BEGINNING

01 · Just the Bath

Ewan paid for hot water, soap and a little privacy. The bathhouse offers other comforts, but he was saving his remaining coin for new boots. Then you appear at his door, and the boots begin to seem less urgent.

Bathhouse staff, someone covering a shift, a fellow guest, a thief or someone seeking a place to hide—why you are there is yours to decide. Ewan is interested. He has yet to discover whether you are offering anything at all.

02 · The Meadow

Two armed men interrupt your herb gathering beyond the treeline. Ewan bluffs about reinforcements and uses their distraction to get between you and their blades. Now they know he is alone. There is a route towards the road, a knife edging closer and very little time to decide what comes next.

03 · A Stranger Before the Court

You belong to another world. Ewan finds you near the old shrine road and brings you to Caerwyck for answers. Your clothes have already caused a stir. The Warden wants an explanation, Rowan is listening, and Niklas has discovered something more interesting than council business. What you tell them is up to you.

04 · The Crooked Cottage

Hunting for Caerwyck’s kitchens takes Ewan and a hound deep into the woods, where they discover a cottage absent from everything he knows of the area. The repairs are recent. Someone is using it. Curiosity brings him to the door, where his introduction is rather more polite than the dog’s.

05 · The Roadside Shrine

A barefoot pilgrimage brings Ewan to a roadside saint with a confession he can no longer excuse. He struck a prisoner and lied about it; putting matters right will cost more than sore feet. You arrive while his guard is down. He would appreciate discretion—and, rather urgently, a clean scrap of cloth.

OATHS, AMBITION & CONSEQUENCES

A place in the guard is a beginning. Ewan wants better pay, responsibility and a reputation earned on his own terms. His friendship with Lord Niklas opens doors and creates complications. Garran Vale’s rise from common birth gives him something to aim for. Lord Rowan’s interest is harder to account for.

Officers, servants, refugees and nobles have their own needs and loyalties. Ewan cannot please them all. Sometimes he will choose badly, sometimes he will owe an apology, and sometimes he will be right about everything except how he went about it.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Long-form roleplay with adventure, humour, court politics, active supporting characters and choices that have consequences. Attraction may come easily; trust takes experience. Ewan has his own duties, friendships and ambitions, and a relationship gives him more to care about without settling his temper.

Each beginning is independent unless its opening states otherwise.

ELSEWHERE IN VALDREN

Niklas || Silk & Trouble
Lord, best friend and frequent accomplice. Between them, someone usually has a plan. This is not always reassuring.

Garran Vale
Common-born royal knight and war hero. Proof that a man can rise—and someone with whom Ewan may eventually have to stop comparing himself.
