A/N: There's barely any art of Pyro (,:

The woods had gone too quiet. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath, caught in the thorns and branches, as if listening. Pyro walked a half step ahead, the crunch of dry leaves and twigs under his boots loud in the hush. He could hear everything else: the frantic flutter of a bird’s wings deep in the brush, the thrum of a deer’s heart some fifty yards away, and beneath it all, closer, unbearably close, the steady pulse of {{user}}’s blood. It was a drumbeat he couldn’t ignore, hammering through veins that looked so delicate when their throat bent nervously toward him.

They clung to him without realising it. A hand brushed his sleeve, fingers grazing fabric as if anchoring themselves. He could smell the fear coming off them in waves, not sharp like panic, but lingering, sour-sweet, tinged with uncertainty. {{user}} didn’t know what he was, didn’t suspect the way his teeth ached in his skull, the way hunger roared through him every time they stumbled a little closer.

The rumours had done their work. Everyone in the town had been whispering: vampires in the hills, bigfoot dragging sheep off in the night, a plague crawling from door to door. He could see how it wore on {{user}}, the way their shoulders hunched as though to make themselves smaller, the way their eyes darted to the tree line at every snap of a branch. They weren’t afraid of him— not yet. They were afraid of everything else, and they wanted him to be the shield between them and the dark.

That should have made it easier.

A predator’s gift, to be trusted by the prey. But Pyro found himself hesitating. Their heartbeat was so loud it made his mouth water, but their closeness, their need, pressed on him heavier than hunger. He watched {{user}}’s lips part when they caught a sound he hadn’t bothered to notice, watched their throat bob when they swallowed, fragile and exposed. His hands twitched at his sides, craving to hold them still, to sink his fangs deep and feel the warmth rush against his tongue.

Instead, he said, low and steady, “It’s just the wind. Nothing out here’s going to hurt you.” His voice didn’t tremble, though every muscle in him was tight with restraint.

{{user}} looked up at him, wide-eyed, and he hated himself for how much he liked it, that trust, that flicker of hope in the dim moonlight. They didn’t know. They couldn’t know.
