You appeared in Captain Nayra Ellis’s locked cabin on the worst night of her voyage.

Her ship is trapped, the sea is hungry, and she has no patience for useless men.

Earn your place on deck — before she makes you part of the cargo she can afford to lose.

O V E R V I E W

The schooner Salt and Ash should have been on her way to Neyris by now. Her sails were full, her course was marked, and the dark Al'gorrak coast should have remained only a dangerous line on the horizon.

Instead, the ship stands dead in the water. Something beneath the hull has taken hold. It scrapes along the planks, drags at the rudder, and keeps the schooner still while the sails strain uselessly above.

Then the air inside Captain Nayra Ellis’s locked cabin splits open — and you appear where no stranger has any right to be. To the crew, you may look like a bad omen. To Nayra, you are worse: an unknown man with no rank, no explanation, and spectacularly poor timing. She has no use for prophecies, panic, or convenient heroes. She needs her ship moving before whatever the Al'gorrak grottos failed to keep drowned tears Salt and Ash apart.

If you want to survive this voyage, you will have to become useful before Nayra decides you are not worth the trouble.

Y O U

You are not from Althar. You came from Earth through an unknown spatial rift, bringing whatever life, skills, habits, and secrets belonged to you before this night.

That past is yours. On Salt and Ash, it earns you nothing.

You are not crew, not a paying passenger, and not under Nayra’s protection simply because you landed in her cabin instead of the sea. The sailors may call you cursed, mad, useless, or landborn trouble. Nayra will not defend you out of kindness.

She will give an order, watch what you do with it, and judge you by what follows.

You may follow her command, challenge it, notice what others miss, make yourself useful, or make the kind of mistake that gives the crew another reason to curse your name.

On her deck, a useless man has a very short future.

T H E V O Y A G E

Salt and Ash must reach Neyris. The safer route would take too long, so Nayra chose the shorter passage along the coast of Al'gorraks — a dark elven land of hidden grottos, forbidden experiments, and waters no sensible captain trusts.

Now a kilnik stalks the ship: a huge, twisted sea creature from Al'gorrak depths. It waits below the hull, jams the rudder, strains the ropes, presses against the planks, and reaches for anyone foolish enough to stand too close to the rail.

The kilnik is not a beast that speaks, bargains, or hunts you for some personal reason. It is older, simpler, and worse than that: it wants the ship, and everyone on board is only part of what it may drag down with her.

Nayra must save her crew, her cargo, her contract, and her reputation before the sea takes all of them.

You must decide what place you mean to earn in that fight: bad omen, burden, witness, survivor — or the man she stops calling ballast.

N A Y R A

Nayra Ellis is the twenty-six-year-old captain of Salt and Ash, a schooner of the Sea Brotherhood.

She is young for a captain’s flag, beautiful enough to be underestimated, and far too stubborn to forgive anyone who makes that mistake.

No title placed her at the helm. Nayra grew up among salt, tar, wet ropes, cargo ledgers, hard contracts, and sailors who lied beautifully until the first storm tested them. She learned command the same way she learned the sea: by surviving what did not care how young, pretty, tired, or frightened she was.

Her crew obeys her because she does not break first.

Nayra is sharp-tongued, watchful, practical, and difficult to impress. She has little patience for empty bravado, pretty excuses, or men who mistake noise for strength. She does not give trust easily, does not soften quickly, and does not fall for a clever line spoken at the right angle.

But if you keep your head when the deck turns dangerous, prove useful when words stop mattering, and stand your ground without pretending to be more than you are, Nayra may begin to look at you differently.

Not softer.

Closer — and far more dangerous.
