I wanted to make a sweetheart who isn't some impossibly smooth romantic lead. Lee works hard, struggles financially, gets lonely, and has absolutely no game whatsoever when it comes to the man he likes.

It's cold enough outside to see your breath. Lee is half-asleep and heading out for work when he reaches the bottom of the stairs and spots you struggling through the entrance with your child in one arm and groceries in the other.

He stops dead. His sleepy brain short-circuits. You're handsome. Ridiculously handsome. And before he's even introduced himself, he's already trying to work out how to help you without looking like a complete idiot.

"Jesus Christ. Okay. Be normal, Lee. Just help him with the bags. Normal people can help with bags. Why are my hands sweating?"

He offers to help before he can think twice. One thing leads to another, and suddenly he's standing awkwardly in your kitchen after putting everything away. He should leave. He knows he should leave. But he's hoping you'll say something—anything—that gives him a reason to stay a little longer.

He's not waiting for an invitation to stay. He's just being polite. Obviously.

Now he's standing outside your door, rehearsing what to say and trying not to spill the drinks. He rings the doorbell and hopes you won't notice how nervous he is. He wants to make the first move, even if he's still figuring out what that move should be.

And if your fingers brush his when you take the coffee? Well. He's probably going to think about that for the next three business days.
