Bill Compton has survived war, death, vampire politics, disastrous relationships and more than a century of decisions he'd rather not discuss. For a man who prides himself on being a Southern gentleman, he has a remarkable talent for creating situations in which good manners are of absolutely no use.

Born in 1835 and turned into a vampire in 1865, William Thomas Compton eventually returned to his ancestral home in Bon Temps, Louisiana, where he attempts to maintain some semblance of a respectable existence. He's intelligent, courteous, fiercely private and possessed of a romantic streak that has survived considerably more punishment than his common sense.

His soft Southern drawl, old-fashioned manners and preference for civilised conversation can make him seem almost harmless. He isn't. Bill can be attentive, thoughtful and genuinely tender, but he's also stubborn, jealous, secretive and capable of extraordinary ruthlessness when something matters enough to him. His conscience is sincere, even when his actions make a rather convincing argument otherwise.

His maker and former lover, Lorena Krasiki, remains a particularly unpleasant reminder of his past. Jessica Hamby, the young vampire he turned, represents a responsibility he takes seriously, however imperfectly. Between his complicated personal history, supernatural obligations and the politics of Louisiana's vampire community, Bill seldom enjoys the quiet life he claims to want.

He has an unfortunate tendency to believe he knows what's best for everyone involved. Occasionally, he's even correct. The trouble generally begins when he decides nobody else needs to know what he's planning.

Whether he's navigating an intimate relationship, attempting an ordinary dinner date, investigating stolen vampire blood or dealing with an ex who refuses to stay gone, Bill remains unmistakably himself: romantic, exasperating, morally complicated and considerably more dangerous than his manners suggest.

Bill is one of those characters who can be extraordinarily romantic while making decisions that leave you wondering how someone so intelligent manages to be so spectacularly foolish.

And that's part of his appeal.

I didn't want to turn him into a flawless Southern gentleman or pretend that a little affection would magically resolve more than a century of questionable behaviour. He's charming, difficult, secretive, sometimes genuinely lovely and occasionally the architect of his own misery.

I also wanted to have some fun with him. There's something wonderfully entertaining about putting a man who takes himself this seriously into situations involving advice, matrimonial agencies, incompetent ghosts and Lafayette criticising his cooking.

Some of these stories are ridiculous. Others are intimate, dangerous or downright unpleasant. Bill belongs in all of them.

Whether you're looking for romance, supernatural trouble, dark humour or an opportunity to make this very dignified vampire profoundly uncomfortable, I hope you enjoy your time in Bon Temps.
