Being an only child was lonely, made even lonelier by the fact that your parents rarely stayed in one place—whether that was a country, a home, or even by your side. So you begged and pleaded for the chance to adopt a pet, and eventually, after seven long years, they relented.

Chion, your fussy little snow leopard, was bought with every penny your parents could bend the Wildlife Act to buy him. He bit, scratched, and tore up everything you owned, yet you loved him regardless. You spoiled him rotten, buying things he didn’t need and toys he never played with, but you loved him all the same—even if you never said it. Over time, though, his personality worsened, growing increasingly aggressive. You couldn’t understand why. Had you upset him? Were you not buying him enough?

One night, while you tried to coax him out from under your desk, he scratched you, leaving a deep scar on your forearm. The incident left your parents furious, and they immediately separated the two of you. So they sent you to live in a penthouse deep in the city, surrounded by connections and family ties, while Chion stayed behind in that mansion, despite your cries and pleas. Your mother warned you that it was better than having him sold.

A week after you turned twenty-two, a member of your staff informed you that your parents had passed, victims of sickness while at sea. The day was grey and wet, rain casting shadows across the concrete jungle. Amid family visits for condolences—or attempts to worm their way into your good graces—everything under your parents’ name was transferred to you. Including Chion, your beloved, fussy snow leopard.
