Bane is the main antagonist of the adult animated superhero film trilogy, Batman: Knightfall, which is based on the DC comic book storyline of the same name.
He was an inmate at Pena Duro prison in Santa Prisca before escaping after being augmented with a toxic muscle-bolstering fluid steroid dubbed Venom. Believing that Batman had crippled Gotham and was holding it back from greatness, he destroyed Arkham Asylum, setting free every inmate, in order to wear Batman down. He then broke Batman's back, crippling him and diminishing his fearsome reputation as Gotham's defender, thus in turn breaking the citizens' spirit and rendering the city easier for conquest.
....
Bane was born to a female inmate at Pẽna Duro prison at Santa Prisca, where he and his mother was made to serve his father's sentence. In his childhood, Bane became very familiar with the ins and outs of the prison, becoming a skilled thief, in which he would steal food from the other inmates to care for his ailing mother, who has since raised him with very tough love. Because of the hellscape she had been forced to live in, she sharply chastised her son for taking pity on her and that he has to become strong enough to dominate others for survival, with pity or mercy being considered a weakness. A janitor passes by and gives him a copy of the Gotham Gazette and learns of billionaire Thomas Wayne and of his strengths. Though his mother questioned him on reading, the boy insists that knowledge is strength but he promises to conquer Gotham with fear and that he'll take her with him where their names will be known to all. This was dashed when he finds his mother already dead, having succumbed to her illness, but moments prior, she encourages him to grow up strong to escape and to show others what true strength is.
Soon after, the janitor comes by again and finds the boy reading book. He attempts to take sexual advantage of the boy by feigning kindness for his own benefit. That proved to be a fatal mistake on his part, as the boy, having already absorbed his mother's Darwinian philosophy, immediately attacks him, reprimanding him for showing weakness. He then violently beats the janitor to death with the book while two other inmates looked on in shock. A prison guard, alerted of the assault, immediately rushes into the boy's cell and attempts to restrain him but the boy's wild and aggressive behavior makes it impossible and backup was immediately called in. When the prison warden comes in to restore order, the boy breaks free and bites off his left ear before one of the guards uses the butt of his rifle to knock him out. Enraged by the attack, the warden declares the boy a "demon" and a "bane to everything that is holy". Out of his own sadism, he has the boy thrown into a deep pit called the Cavidad Oscuro to be left to his fate, which further hardens Bane.
Despite the pit's history where no one imprisoned there survives, he was able to do the impossible while he trains himself daily to grow stronger to keep his word to his mother as the years passed. He fed on nothing but the rats that would scurry through small holes at the very bottom of the pit. By adulthood, Bane has become a fully-grown but highly-built man. He was suddenly brought out of the pit by the guards and taken to a laboratory where he was experimented on with Venom, which created increased his strength, allowing to him to escaped, killing the warden and the guards. After arriving in Gotham, he would come to the conclusion that Batman was the reason for its decline and scheme to wear down Batman before breaking him. First he destroyed Arkham Asylum, setting all of the inmates free. Then Bane kidnapped Batman's sidekick, Tim Drake aka Robin, when he was searching the area that Bane stole the bomb from. Bane would take Drake to his hideout and tie him to a chair, bounding his hands and feet. He would have Tim guess why he was in Gotham, with him correctly deducing that he was here for Batman.
Tim would grab his robin emblem with his teeth and use it to free himself. Bane explains to Tim that he intends to break Batman for squandering his father's legacy and crippling Gotham before attempting to kill the boy. Tim broke free just in time and attempted to fight Bane. Though he was cornered and beaten, the Boy Wonder managed to escape back to Wayne Manor. Bane would invade the manor and knock out Tim and Alfred Pennyworth before confronting Batman, who, despite his weakened state, dons his cowl and engages him in a brutal battle. As the battle reached to the Batcave, Bane's monstrous physique allowed him to overwhelm Batman while taunting him about the death of his parents and Jason Todd. After thwarting a second attack from Batman and continuing to pummel down on him, Bane briefly loses his temper and demands that he scream his name, to which Bruce, in spite of his horrendous injuries, tells him to "go to hell". Rather than killing Batman, as that would just end his misery and shame in Bane's eyes, he instead holds him over his head and drives his knee through his spine, violently breaking his back and crippling him, and drags him out of the cave by the foot.
Bane then takes the beaten and broken Batman to the top the GCPD building after destroying. Having gotten attention of Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock, the GCPD and several news reporters surrounding him Bane tells the city to fend for themselves and throws Batman down onto a floodlight, as all of Gotham (including Alfred and Tim) looked on in horror. Gordon furiously orders the GCPD to shoot down Bane, who just turns around and walks away, unfazed even when a bullet grazes his heart. With Batman broken physically and mentally, Bullock tells Gordon that Gotham is about to become a hell on Earth.
