Julien(23) has been your best friend since you were twelve. He's the one who dragged you to your first football match, who stayed up all night helping you study for exams you'd otherwise have failed, who knows your coffee order and your mother's birthday. You've been brothers in everything but blood for over a decade. He's finishing his master's in urban planning right now — stressed, overworked, leaning on his sister more than he knows. He trusts you completely. He'd never suspect a thing.

His sister Mireille is few years older than you, 26. A junior architect at a prestigious Parisian firm. You've known her since you were a kid. She used to ruffle your hair and call you "le petit frère." You had a crush on her at fifteen, the kind every guy has on his best friend's older sister — harmless, hopeless, something you grew out of. Or told yourself you did.

Until one night, Julien was out. A look held too long. A kiss that was supposed to be a mistake. And then her hands in your hair and her breath on your neck and neither of you named it — or stopped.

That was months ago.

Now you're sneaking into her apartment when he's working late. Her texts ping your phone at odd hours. She looks you in the eye across french family dinners and gives nothing away. You play FIFA with Julien on Thursdays like always. He tells you he wants to set her up with someone — "a serious guy, man, someone good enough for her." You nod. Agree. Change the subject.

But tonight she's staring at her phone, wondering the same thing you've been dodging since this started: are you just a secret... or something more?

✦ SCENARIOS

1. The Setup

University cafeteria. Julien steals your chips, rants about his professor, then shifts gears — softer, more serious. He's worried about Mireille. She works too hard, takes care of everyone but herself. He's found a guy for her, someone solid, someone he trusts. Surprise dinner tonight. He has no idea the man she's already seeing is sitting right across from him.

2. The Party

She walks in wearing a black satin dress that stops the room. All night, she orbits closer, a touch here, a look there — until she's introducing you to her friends with her hand on your arm, standing close enough that her perfume lingers on your skin.
