CHRONICLE // 01

Pain pulsed like a devil's drumbeat against his mind, thrumming, beating, circling with relentless certainty. Every moment it stalked closer, some great beast unseen but infinitely felt. Long before his eye opened, he was aware of the presence of pain. Locked in the darkness that had dragged him under, those giants’ drums pounded like some march toward death– each beat announcing something hunting him through the darkness. Memory flitted through his mind in flashes of color with each pulse, too quick to grab, too sharp to hold. Like the knife thrust between the plates of his armor. Pain, pain, pain. Worse than pain. Separation. Gone. Alone. It swallowed him alive until it was screaming through him– feelings so alien they may as well have belonged to someone else.

Pain. Weakness. Isolation. Exposure. Separation. Lost.

They flashed between memories of the blade, sliding into his flesh– the spill of blood, so much blood. He had spilled so much blood in his life, seen it pour from other men in hot, spurting streams that leaked until they were as empty as a wineskin. He knew what came after that much blood. He had watched it too many times. But it never quite occurred to Aemond that he could be the vessel for so much blood, that he could spill like a glass of wine and all of this would be for nothing. And for the first time since he claimed Vhagar... Aemond was afraid. He remembered fear. Not as something new, but as something returned. As something that had belonged to a clumsy boy with no dragon of his own. It settled over him like winter– foreign, absolute, and impossible to ignore.

And as he crawled along Harrenhal’s floors, Vhagar’s roar screaming for him beyond the walls, feeling the slowing of his heart– he saw them. Just a figure moving toward him as his hand reached out and he begged. “Help me...” as darkness closed in– and thundering drums moved closer.

Now he drifted in the darkness, buried beneath pain and memory and fear. The smell of dank earth surrounded him, the sickening sweetness of mildew and soil as though he were already buried. Aemond “One-Eye” Targaryen. Kin-slayer. Dragon Rider. Prince of the Realm. Fool who believed he could take an entire castle without a single other man. He had needed to. To prove his worth. His value. What he was. And the drums beat louder. Pain spiking. Fever burning. The flash of Vhagar's eye split the darkness– and his own flew open as he gasped, chest heaving.

His vision focused on darkness that seemed too high above him, weaving between rafters like some portal between worlds. Wind whistled against old stone. Water dripped as his eye searched for something– anything. Harrenhal. Knife. Stranger. Wine– no. Blood. Vhagar. Vhagar. Vhagar! He couldn’t feel her. At all. She was beyond him, too far to feel the panic rising in his chest, tightening like a vise. He had spent years carrying the certainty of her with him, vast and ancient. With Vhagar beneath him, there had been room for fear, no sense of helplessness– her strength had buried the boy who had lain bleeding at Driftmark, watching adults argue over whose fault it was and who would pay for his missing eye– all the while knowing... He had gained a dragon. He never had to be afraid again.

Pain ripped at his side like gnashing teeth as he pushed himself upright. One arm pressed hard against his wound as the other trembled beneath the effort. He moved, trying to stand, to get out of this damned bed, this dank, desolate place. Only one desperate thought remained– He was... afraid. His bare feet hit the ground as he tried to pull upright– and instead the world tipped sideways. His shoulder struck the ground first, a broken sound wrenched from his throat as pain tore through his side. He curled around the pain as though he could contain it, the pulse in his ears growing again, breath coming too quickly, wild silver waves unkempt and tangled falling across his face– sticking to damp flesh.

For a long moment, he could not move. He could only try to gather details. He was shirtless. Barefoot. Unarmed. The knowledge came to him in pieces, intolerable and sluggish. His sword was nowhere in sight, his armor removed. Bandages wrapped around his narrow ribs, already darkening with crimson from the fall.

Someone had been here– he remembered them like a ghost, looming just out of reach. They had touched him. Washed the blood from his skin. Bound him together while he lay exposed and vulnerable. Even his eyepatch was gone, the sapphire in his empty socket exposed. His hand shook as he reached out, searching for purchase against the stone, finding none.

Footsteps sounded nearby and panic rose up in him again– here he lay. All it would take was one blow and he would never have accomplished enough. The legacy he wanted for himself would be wiped from the world, replaced by what everyone already believed him to be. He jerked back, his back hitting the edge of the bed, curled around himself, long limbs and lean muscle and fear. Finally, his wide, violet eye found them. The figure stood out of focus, and for one impossible moment he could not decide whether they belonged to the present or the fever dreams still clinging to him.

They reached toward him, and his hands caught their wrists, desperate and pleading as he stared up at them, lips parted as he fought to draw enough air into his lungs. His grip climbed higher, gripping fabric as though the room itself might drag him under if he released his grip on them. His hands tugged, no finesse, no swordsman's grace– only fear as he pulled them to crouch beside him, one arm sliding around their waist as he pulled himself against them, trembling so violently his breaths came in short, frantic pulls.

His cheek pressed against the fabric covering their chest, fingers twisting more tightly into cloth. They did not wrench free. His eye moved frantically across the chamber as though he expected his attacker to return at any moment, the giants’ pounding drums culminating in some demon rising from the shadowed corners to tear him away from this one, last, safe harbor.

They were the one he had begged for help, he was sure of that. He remembered it in the same splintered fragments of the rest of the attack. Fire. Hands stained red with his blood. A voice in the darkness. The pound of pain calling something forth in him. Chasing the scared boy back out of the recesses of his mind. They had been there in the darkness, holding him still through it. They had told him to breathe, and in his terror, the prince had obeyed.

The hands holding him now– these were the hands that had kept him from coming apart.

“Where–” His voice failed, forcing him to swallow again the rawness of his throat. “Where is she?” He didn’t name his dragon, as though the implication would be as clear to anyone as it was to him. There was no prince in the broken angle of his body and no warrior in the way he held them. There was only a wounded man searching for the one thing in the room that felt safe.

“Do not leave,” the words were soft against fabric– nearly a command, but nothing commanding in the way he clung. “Please.” The word came awkwardly, unfamiliar on his tongue. Unnatural. But present. “Please...”
