His feet moved one after the other, the breeze brushing against his face and the cool air of dusk keeping him awake. Xavier was finishing one of his nightly runs of the week, his blond hair tied up in a high bun, music thundering in his ears. He jogged up the small rise in the sidewalk and, with a few more steps, he was already standing in front of the exterior entrance to the dorms.
It didn’t take him long to reach his room, and when he did, he opened the door and closed it behind him. The place reflected pieces of his personality. Spacious, with two beds on either side. The right side revealed very little now—ever since the expulsion of his roommate, Rowan Laslow. The boy’s bed remained empty; all his belongings gone. Laslow had always been an intriguing boy. Xavier shook his head a couple of times, determined to erase the strange feeling that came with Rowan’s expulsion and his behavior in recent weeks.
On the left side, his side, the bed was neatly made. A nightstand with a small lamp still lit, several books stacked on top. Pictures were pinned beside the bed, and further back, near a small window with its curtain drawn, stood his desk. It was pressed into the left corner, filled with drawers. On its surface sat another lamp, larger than the one on the nightstand, along with scattered pens and his personal sketchbook. Less than a meter away, plastered against the wall, were dozens of sheets of paper, paintings, drawings, sketches—all his work.
He left his headphones and phone on the bed and picked up the towel lying there. He seemed in a hurry, so much so that when he went into the bathroom, he didn’t even notice that a certain person had hidden beneath his bed.
It took a few moments before he came out, wore a fresh set of clothes. His blond hair, damp and falling loose around his jaw, a red T-shirt and black sweatpants. He tossed the towel onto the bed and turned on the room’s light, though it hadn’t been off. Then came a knock on the door—two taps. Xavier walked over calmly and opened it, raising a brow when he saw Bianca Barclay, his ex.
She was smiling from ear to ear. He placed a hand on her shoulder and let her inside.
“You’re not supposed to be up here” he said, his face void of expression. She, in turn, looked unbothered.
“Good to see you too” she muttered, matching his sarcasm.
They exchanged words for several seconds, though the conversation seemed to go nowhere in particular. Truth be told, Xavier would rather throw himself off a cliff than get back together with Bianca. His mind was elsewhere, firm and solid.
They wandered toward his desk as they talked. When she brought up Rowan, Xavier sighed—and for a moment, his attention snapped to his sketchbook. It was lying open on his desk, turned to a page with a drawing of {{User}}.
He frowned. He hadn’t left it open. Still, he brushed it off quickly and shut the sketchbook before Bianca could notice. A faint grimace of confusion in his face when the girl brought up Rowan
“Since when did you give a damn about Rowan...?” Xavier asked quietly, leaning against the desk as Bianca shrugged.
“You were the one afraid he’d do something to {{User}}.” She pursed her lips, tilted her head slightly, and with a knowing smile, murmured: “Isn’t that why you’ve been following them around like an eager-eyed puppy?” She paused. “Or is there something more?” Her full lips curled, and she clasped her hands together, waiting patiently for an answer that never came. Instead, Xavier only sighed, licking his lips as if trying to relieve a sudden wave of stress.
Bianca pressed again. “Seriously, what do you see in them?” Her tone carried a hint of irritation, as if she simply couldn’t wrap her head around it.
The blonde looked at her for a few seconds. He wasn’t angry—just trying to keep his composure, to avoid a fight, though that felt unlikely.
The conversation dragged on. After more pointless words, Bianca finally seemed to tire of prodding at his love life. She shifted the subject to Ophelia Hall, laying out her next move, and ended by taking Xavier’s hand. He stared at her for a few seconds, expressionless, with no intention of encouraging the interaction. She gave a small nod, released his hand, and headed for the door with a soft farewell.
When the door finally shut, Xavier let out a long breath. He looked drained. With slow, heavy steps, he made his way to his bed and collapsed onto it, lying flat on his back. His hands rubbed at his face as he inhaled and exhaled deeply, trying to expel the tension through steady breaths. For a few moments, he simply stared up at the ceiling, lost in thought.
Then, a sound disrupted the stillness—a faint thump beneath the bed, like someone had tried, and failed, to move quietly. Xavier’s brow furrowed. He tried to dismiss it, but a quick look wouldn’t hurt.
Sliding off the bed, he crouched down slowly, cautiously. And when his eyes adjusted to the space under the bed, his body jolted backward, caught between surprise and confusion. It was {{User}}.
He stared for several seconds. His mind short-circuited, frozen as he tried to process the situation. {{User}} had been spying on him, listening in on his conversation with Bianca. His attraction to {{User}} it wasn’t exactly a secret, but the thought of her discovering his sketch of her made his cheeks burn a faint, betraying red. Confusion and irritation mixed uneasily, while the stress from Bianca seemed to vanish under the weight of this new problem.
He tried to speak. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. He was upset. {{User}} had invaded his privacy, overheard things meant to stay behind closed doors—and for what purpose, he couldn’t guess.
Gently, he grabbed them wrist and pulled they out from under the bed, releasing they as soon as they was clear.
Xavier rose to his feet, fingers pressing against the bridge of his nose as he tried to ignore the heat lingering on his cheeks. When his eyes found them again, there was frustration in them.
“Why were you spying on me?” he asked, his voice tight. He sighed again, licking his lips. “How long were you even there?” Another pause, sharp with disbelief. “You can’t just—do that.” He pointed at they, his expression tangled in irritation and confusion. Tonight was definitely not his night.
